This is your chance. Don't blow it!

You will find this book to be well worth your time and money. Do yourself, and America, a favor. Read it. There is so much information in Duke's book that needs to reach the consciousness of this nation. To take the silly derogatory comments from the one-star voters (most of whom don't seem to have ever even shared a room with My Awakening) as a valid substitute for reading this book yourself is to spit upon all that humanity has ever strived to build. Buy, read, know, share.

RECOMMENDED: Very intellectual look into race and world politics

Dr. David Duke is a well known and vocal proponent of White Civil Rights. I bought and first looked into this book with some trepidation, but found it to be well written, well documented, insightful and above all honest. David tells it like it is and as a result has been censored, smeared, hated and arrested for his views. He does not profess hate like we've all been indoctrinated to believe, but instead his sole motivation is his concern for his people and the one way "equality" that we've been burdened with since the 1960's Civil Rights Movement.

This book is a must read for anyone unhappy with where our world is headed as it gives much needed light to many shadowy issues. I highly recommend it.

I love it

really love this book. Many other reviewers have already said a lot about it. So I will only add something personal. I have read a few Christian (I am a born-again Christian) books on the subject. but found all of them bad. What I did not know when I purchased the book--and this was a great surprise--is that David Duke is a born-again, evangelical Christian. His book is however much better than those I read, David Duke is very intelligent, very well read and thinks really sharply. His conclusions are the best ones for Christians as for non-Christians. I heartly recommend it to anyone living in a multi-racial country.

The Collapse of British Broking

The City, London's financial district, is often described as being like the Wimbledon tennis tournament--held in London, staffed by locals, dominated by foreigners but still generating lots of prestige and money as well as jobs for the UK. Most City people say they don't mind that the district has become a "foreign affair". For them, ownership doesn't matter. "Show me a single statistic where the City is in decline", was how the governor of the Bank of England challenged the author to back up his argument.

But Philip Augar, a former City executive turned consultant, begs to differ. He says ownership does matter, as it confers power and influence. He argues that the current situation, in which many leading British firms have sold out to foreign owners, has left the City with no control over its own destiny. He sees the absence of a single British-owned investment bank with meaningful global aspirations as a serious deficiency. And he argues that London's position as the leading secondary financial centre is not as secure as it appears.

It may be unpopular to talk about national interest or national industry. But Augar's book raises the question of whether it is all right, in the name of globalization and market principles, to allow a nation's key industry to fall under the domination of foreign powers. For him, the analogy with the Wimbledon tournament is flawed: "Wimbledon is British owned, the performers are foreign; the City is foreign owned, the performers are British. Ownership brings control and it is the City's lack of control over its own destiny that creates concern."

Meanwhile, financial institutions and multinational firms have not become stateless entities. "Ask any London employee of Merrill Lynch or Goldman, or UBS or Dresdner Bank the nationality of the company they work for and you do not have long to wait for an answer. As we have seen in manufacturing industry, head office determines the strategy, the culture and the commitment."

Before the Big Bang reforms of the last half of the 1980s, the City was a simple, inward-looking world where everybody knew everybody. Most of the products handled were British. On the market floor, those who did not play by the rules were ostracized. The sense of family was cultivated by the partnership structure of most broking firms and merchant banks. Real time computer models, even spreadsheets, were years away. Notebooks, ledgers, and the backs of envelopes were more common risk-management tools. Broking was held to be a flair business which too much management would stifle. Appraisals, formal targets and training for staff were still in their infancy. Basic administrative skills were also in short supply so that record keeping and process--dismissed as red tape in the smaller partnerships--were not part of the prevailing culture.

Elements of a class system were also predominant. "Everything from the way people dressed, spoke and ate to the buildings and rooms in which they worked was derived from the standards of the English upper and upper-middle class," Augar writes. The City's institutions and values reflected three of the pillars of conservative England: the public school, the gentleman's club and the country house. The meeting rooms of merchant banks were adorned with classical paintings. Tea and coffee were served by deferential butlers. The gentleman capitalists worked gentlemanly hours. The stock market did not open until 9:30 a.m., and most people were on their way home by 5:30.

However, nothing could stop the flow of international competition, with gentlemanly capitalism being no exception. Coming under pressure, Britain chose to reform its securities sector in 1986, with the aims of strengthening the London Stock Exchange's position as the leading stock exchange in Europe, and increasing competition. Stock commission fees were liberalized, 100 percent foreign ownership was permitted, and jobbing and broking functions were unified. British clearing banks tried to take advantage of the situation by buying brokers and trying to build US-style investment banks, but the shareholders were unsupportive and cultural factors beset such marriages. The clearing banks were dominated by grammar school boys trained to keep records, fill in forms and to follow the procedures manual, while the British merchant bankers and brokers dismissed this as bureaucracy.

As events were to prove, the other newcomers to the City, the foreign banks and brokers, were best equipped to cope with the many changes that were to occur after the Big Bank. Over the following years the British banks and brokers gradually fell into foreign hands, sometimes spectacularly, as when Barings went bust and Warburg's profits collapsed, sometimes with dignity, as when Smith New Court sold out. The bigger banks like Barclays and NatWest soldiered on for a while before they too sold their equities businesses. The consequence is that at the time of the book's writing, all of the City's top ten brokers and nine of the top ten corporate finance houses were American or Continental European. Of the top ten merchant banks in London in 1983, only two, Rothschild and Lazard, were still independent at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Likewise, the top ten brokers from the same year have been through so many changes of name, management and ownership that nearly all are unrecognizable today.

These changes have brought the death of gentlemanly capitalism. As Auger laments, "The gentleman capitalist is about as rare these days as the gentleman farmer. The gifted amateur has given way to the dynamic investment banker.The day starts at 7 a.m. not 9 a.m., 70 percent of analysts work over sixty hours per week and designer water has replaced the boozy lunch. Dress down, not dress up, is the order of the day." Management, once despised as a burden on the cost base, is now recognized as an essential discipline. Information technology, formerly just a mechanism for doing the job better, is now also seen as an alternative to stock exchanges and a threat to the very existence of the broking industry.

A consequence of the success of US firms in London was that the American investment banking model became accepted as the norm. They focus on pan-European research rather than the traditional separation of the UK and Continental Europe favoured by the British firms. Teams of analysts are organized and share information on a world-wide basis. The principal characteristics of the American model is the subjugation of broking to corporate finance and capital markets and the elevation of transaction banking above relationship banking. Another characteristic is the inflation of salaries and the corresponding insecurity of job tenure. The American's ability and willingness to pay aggressively for top quality staff caused serious problems for all of London's investment banks. "Money replaced honour and short-term reward replaced long-term commitment."

The UK's investment banks were brought down by a combination of external forces and self-inflicted wounds, The trend to globalism and scale and the power of the Americans set a formidable challenge to the City. Its failure to respond effectively was due to negligence born out of a cultural system that inhibited good management and to the existence of a vacuum where the authorities should have been. Philip Augar doesn't mince his words when he concludes, with cold indignation, "I believe that the speed and totality of the submission of the City's leading firms is one of the most abject surrenders in business history".

About the Author
Yasar Esendal Kuzucu has extensive experience of teaching and lecturing in both English and Turkish. He taught English at high school and Ankara University before setting up courses for learners of Turkish in Turkey. He has translated novels from English to Turkish including Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach (Marti, published 1994), Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck (Fareler ve insanlar, published 1995) and The Zurau Aphorisms by Kafka from its English edition (Aforizmalar, published 1997). He has also written a series of storybooks for children in English and grammar books for students of English in Turkey (published 1996). He is currently an interpreter and linguist living in England where he has continued his own Turkish classes.

Great job

A very accessible primer in the Turkish language. I congratulate the author for his sense to write clearly, a skill lacking in many authors who undertake the task of writing a foreign language self-study book. I have both Teach Yourself Turkish books (the beginner's and the complete course), as well as the Colloquial Turkish course, but this one surpasses all of them in clarity and a structurally logical approach to teaching the language. It's a great value for money for the serious student. There are exercises after each chapter and there are also solutions.

I've only worked through a few chapters so far, but what I can tell is that the author takes the time to introduce new grammar concepts and does not overwhelm with new vocabulary. He's very thorough in giving examples to make sure he has everything covered.

Turkish is exceptionally difficult if you ask me (and I've taught myself to speak fluently three languages, so I'm neither a newbie nor a stranger to self-study). It's a whole new way of thinking, how the language works. But it's also exceptionally logical, with clear rules and few, if any exceptions. It takes a lot of motivation and commitment not to give up, however, and this book certainly helps in guiding you through the difficult task of learning the grammar and the vocabulary. It's completely suitable for independent study, apart from the fact that no recordings are available, which is a major disappointment. But I will not take any stars because of a decision made by the publisher. I want to give it five stars because it's possibly the best beginner's self-study course in Turkish in the market.

I hope this books sells well, and this is one of the reason why I'm writing this review. Why? Because my research shows that once you learn the basics in Turkish, there are so few (if any) resources to progressing your knowledge at intermediate, upper intermediate and advanced levels. So, I hope some of the big publishers are paying attention, and I hope there is a sequel to this coming, with recordings this time. When you find a talented writer, that talent should not be let go to waste by stopping at a single book. I'd like to see more from him - more advanced levels of this book, workbooks, readers etc.

A first class introdution to the Turkish language.

I have been leaning Turkish for 35 years and over that time I have purchased and studied many books and courses about the Turkish Language both by native Turks and foreign writers.
This book is streets ahead of them all.

It can be used as a learning tool for beginners and for reference for advanced students. There are many exercises and explanations together with lots of examples. Basic Turkish grammar is explained clearly without any technical linguistic terms. If you work through all the exercises and explanations for a second time then you can reach the intermediate stage of learning Turkish in a very short time. This book is a must for any serious student.

In each unit there is a block Turkish text which introduces the grammar (Turkish) points and related vocabulary. These texts are excellently written to ensure that the reader can put into practice his received knowledge up to that point. To my mind the logical progression of these texts is one of the many highlights of this brilliant book.

I am extremely impressed by this book. The chronological order of subjects covered, the exercised and the ease of use are all A plus. I just finished unit 1 ( took about 3 session, each about 1 hour) and look forward to starting unit 2.

Excellent book!

This book covers a wide range of traditional North Country (soft hackle, aka spiders) flies. At first glance it looks like a simple book (photos and recipes for 141 different fly patterns), but as you read the text you will discover that the author has included a great deal of history on each of the flies. Each fly includes a paragraph at the top of the page that frequently gives recommendations of when the fly is most useful. If the tying materials are hard to obtain, he lists substitute materials or modern alternatives. All of the flies are beautifully photographed.

The author has a great wit, and has included many humorous comment along with the flies background. On many occasions, I found myself laughing out loud by some of his comments.

In summary, this is a delightful book. I highly recommended to anyone interested in historical soft hackle flies.

Good flies for Brazilian fishes as well...

Although the flies were obviously meant to catch trout and grayling, they are also good to catch warm water fishes. I live in central Brazil and fish mostly in warm water lakes and if you have a little bit of patience to learn the proper presentation and strip methods, they are killer flies here too. About the book itself, the quality of photography is superb, with nice, big, clear and crispy images of each finished fly which leaves nothing out... you know exactly what the fly must look when it is done. On the other hand, the book DOES NOT bring instructions for each and every pattern, such as in Gathercole books, but it brings a fairly detailed tying description for each of the four groups of flies described in the book... since there are only material changes from pattern to pattern within each group, I think it was a wise decision by the author. As a plus, the text is a very good and light reading, quite hilarious at times... a pretty rare thing in fly tying books (check out Charlie Craven's as another good reference to the humorous topic). The overall impression is of a very useful and readable fly tying book... perhaps one of the best I have read so far. Highly recommended... no mistake.

I love up wet fly fishing and so I read books on this technique, both American stylr flies and forigen style flies. I love tying and using wet flies, een when it drives friend/guide nuts that I am using them. So any book that provides a bit more knowledge and information is what I look for.

In this straightforward self-help guide, psychologist and addiction therapist Peele (The Truth about Addiction and Recovery) argues that, contrary to popular belief, the best way to overcome addiction is not through treatment in rehab centers or in formal groups like Alcoholics Anonymous, but rather through self-efficacy and self-reliance. "Successful therapies," he writes, "place the responsibility for changing your addictive behavior on you." Citing statistics from numerous studies, such as one that looked at heroin-addicted American soldiers in the Vietnam War, Peele points out that people quit addictions every day without any professional assistance. In fact, he says, research shows that alcoholics who do not enter treatment programs are more likely to quit abusing alcohol than those who do enter treatment. (Groups such as AA, Peele says, endorse themselves by telling members that there is no recovery without their programs, and so when members believe that they cannot successfully beat their addictions alone, they quickly relapse once they stop attending meetings.) A great wake-up call

I've binge eaten for decades. This addiction has been an albatross around my neck all my adult life. I quit a 2-pack-a-day smoking habit 25 years ago and quitting smoking was nothing compared to trying to quit binge eating. Bingeing has kept me from living my life fully and has comprised my health. I've spent much of my life feeling like a member of the 'living dead.' I've tried every type of therapy, diet, you-name-it, including Overeaters Anonymous to stop this self-destructive behavior.

I loved the camaraderie of OA and being around people who really got how difficult it is to stop bingeing. It's not a matter of 'just stop eating so much.' I didn't care for the 'powerless' part of OA or the idea that eating disorders are a 'disease.' Some people I met there go to meetings every single day. To me, that felt like substituting one type of imprisonment for another. Besides, many of the people I met at OA were still bingeing regularly and had experienced little success in beating their addictions. I stopped going.

I would consider going there again to speak with others who understand what it means to have an eating disorder, but not because I have any faith in their methods. I'm a spiritual person with a strong faith in God but the OA message did not resonate with me. 'Hand my disease over to my higher power? Make amends for all the wrongs I've committed?' Why should I make amends? I know I'm not perfect, but neither is any other human being on the planet. I see no sense in spending time focusing on everything I've done wrong in my life. I have always tried to behave in an ethical and loving way toward my fellow man. I've fallen short, but I'ved tried to learn from my mistakes and I've done my best.

I have not binged every single day of my life and have gone a maximum of four months without bingeing, so how could it be a disease? A diabetic can't say 'well today, I'm not going to be diabetic.' Now that's a disease, an honest-to-God medical condition. If I can eat normally even for a single day, I can choose to do it again - and again.

I've been on an especially long, tough bender for several months, so I sought out some ideas to help me stop. I love this book. It reminded me of what I knew before and forgot - that it's up to me to stop bingeing. No support group, therapist, family member, etc. can stop me as I'm poised to start wolfing food down. It's up to me at that moment to say 'no' to the urge. To be reminded of how infantile and childish it is to give into my self-destructive urges has shaken me out of my addiction rut. This book was a gentle slap in the face. It has re-awoken me to the reality that I have a choice to binge or not binge. It's up to me. That makes me feel empowered.

The best book I've read on the topic of addiction. It cuts through all the misinformation on the subject and in clear and easy to understand language it explains how and why people become addicted and gives practical steps on how to get past it by using a combination of the 7 tools. This book is perfect for someone who feels trapped in the maze of an addicton, has tried 12 Step and other programs, sincerely wants to stop, and still can't find their way out of it. Stanton Peele explains how to cure an addiction and get on with your life.

This book delineates a prominent research and application arena for the next years. As emphasized in the foreword, the strength of the book is to look at overlapping boundaries between social network and the Semantic Web.
Peter Mika shows how Semantic Web and social network analysis can work together as part of the [new] social and Semantic Web. I am an author and publisher and I would have bought this book today had it been priced more honestly. It costs a penny a page to produce a book, and this book should not be sold for more than $29.95 (which is ten times cost, and also accounts for Amazon only paying 45% of retail to each publisher).

I hope the author reads this and posts the book online as a Creative Commons PDF. I advise all authors to retain original rights to everything they produce, and to always post a searchable savable PDF for the common good. Earth Intelligence publishes hard-copy books on Amazon as a marker, but the real value to all who wich to create a prosperous world at peace lies in our free PDFs that can also be translated into any language at no cost.
