This text explains procedures and rationals very well, in a logical easy to understand way. The only draw back is at the end of each chapter there is no "reveiw questions" to quiz your knowledge.

Bravery and sacrifice for the Emporer.

This black and white graphic novel is comprised of about 20 individual and unrelated short stories from various Warhammer authors and artists. A wide variety of characters experiencing carnage and intense battles are found here, with space marines and guardsmen fighting chaos, orks, and tau. The overriding theme of the stories is the necessity and willingness of Imperial soldiers to sacrifce themselves for the good of the Imperium. Bravery and selflessness in the face of terror carries the day here.

Highly recommended for fans of Warhammer graphic art.

A GREAT COLLECTION OF STORIES

Flames of Damnation is a manga-sized, black and white graphic novel showcasing the talents of numerous artists and writers in a collection of two dozen stories set within the Warhammer 40,000 universe. The first thing that stands out about this 224 page book is the uniform quality of the art. From the first page to the last, the art is outstanding. While some are certainly better than others, I can say with all honesty that there is no weak jobs in the book. That's quite an accomplishment considering the number of different people working on the book. The stories range in page count from 6 to 12 pages or so and are culled from the pages of Warhammer monthly. This is kind of a bash book as the stories are not connected in anyway but are just different, small slices of the Warhammer 40,000 milieu.

A few of my favorite stories in the book included: "Single Combat" written by veteran WH scribe Dan Abnett with phenomenal art by Kevin Hopgood, telling the tale of the last two combatant survivors on a war torn planet and their final battle to the death.

"Zero Option" is another great Abnett story with art by David Pugh. In this story, a lone company of imperial guards mans a lonely outpost on a frozen planet, waiting desperately for help to arrive and holding off the hordes of chaos. At the end we see the fateful means in which they go to survive.

"Predator and Prey" is about a primitive plant on the fringe of the empire. It's native inhabitants, alien tribesmen find themselves in a hunt and struggle with a chaos demon and hoping that the great empire will eventually come to their aid...but reality for this world is much different.

Writer Gordon Rennie and Artist Karl Richardson submit "Last Stand on Yayor" about the desperate struggle of the inhabitants of this planet against hordes of zombie plague infested armies. The Confessor of Agriworld is forced to make the ultimate sacrifice.

In "Black Bone Road", a rogue Psyker is causing a malignant influence on the populace of a planet that even the Space Marines are challenged to stop. Story by Graham McNeill and art by John Standing.

A very well done collection of stories that is great for relative newbies to the Warhammer 40,000 world as it serves as action-jammed indoctrination without getting too far in depth. Awesome!

W40K Comic Novel

Here is a collection of Warhammer 40,000 tales that prove the courage and raw determination of the mighty Space Marines and Imperial Guardsmen. They hunt down and destroy all the enemies of mankind. They crush all invading greenskin (orks) hordes and lay waste to all the horrible forces of Chaos.

**** I found only a few flaws. Most readers either will not notice the errors or simply not care since they are so minor. Yet I could not help but wonder how an ork would know what "playing chicken" even meant. Otherwise, Warhammer 40,000 fans will love the non-stop battles described within these stories ... whether the humans win or lose. ****

About the Author
Stuart L. Hart is one of the world's top authorities on the implications of environment and poverty for business strategy. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, he is one of the founding fathers of the base of the pyramid economic theory. He also serves as Distinguished Fellow at the William Davidson Institute (University of Michigan), Founder and President of Enterprise for a Sustainable World, and Founding Director of the Emergent Institute in Bangalore, India.

Fernando Casado Caneque is the Associate Director of the Enterprise for a Sutainable World's BoP Global Network. A Ph.D. economist and journalist specializing in projects related to economic and sustainable development, he has worked as strategic advisor to a variety of international organizations (such as UNDP, UNIDO, UNDSD, UNEP, OECD, IADB and the World Bank) and has been the general coordinator of UNDPs Millennium Development Goals initiative in Spain. He has also worked as a Senior Consultant in the Department of Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in New York.

Before this book, multiple scale methods were primarily used for non-linear oscillation problems in the applied mathematics community, not for analyzing spatial oscillations as in homogenization. In the current printing a number of minor corrections have been made, and the bibliography was significantly expanded to include some of the most important recent references. This book gives systematic introduction of multiple scale methods for partial differential equations, including their original use for rigorous mathematical analysis in elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic problems, and with the use of probabilistic methods when appropriate. The book continues to be interesting and useful to readers of different backgrounds, both from pure and applied mathematics, because of its informal style of introducing the multiple scale methodology and the detailed proofs.

Examining Aquarion Evol 4

Creator Shouji Kawamori's Aquarion franchise has always tread a thin line between robot anime and romantic fantasy. The fourth collected volume of the Aquarion Evol manga temporarily tips the balance heavily in favor of romantic and relationship drama. The book maintains the franchise's penchant for opaque abstraction, yet at the same time the fourth volume is the most intense, personal, and emotional of the series so far.

The Aquarion Evol story is about the alternate dimension alien Altairians attempting to secure human women supernaturally hardy enough to survive the dimensional transfer from earth to Altair in order to repopulate the dying civilization. So from the outset the story has been about connections and the inability to connect and communicate between people. The fourth book narrows that focus onto each one of the story's primary cast members, alternately bringing them together while tearing them apart from each other and from their own beliefs. The romantic triangle between Amata, Mikono, and Zessica begins to come to a tragic head. Yunoha is forced to come to terms with the greatest loss of her life. Commander Fudo encounters a reunion that forces him to depart on a solitary quest. Cayenne is forced to recognize that the distance between he and his sister has been greater than he realized. Conflicting difference in perspective even arises among the highest command of the Altairian forces. Robot action in volume 4 is minimal and marginalized, relegated to only a two-page training sequence and a brief non-committal battle. The bulk of the book focuses on weighty emotional angst, deliberate philosophical decisions, and the major plot developments that occur as a result of character's emotional and philosophical decisions.

The Aquarion franchise has always been a strange hybrid of slapstick, absurdity, and drama. The fourth volume is the Evol series' most dour, intense, and dramatic installment so far, but it occasionally takes its depiction to absurd extremes. A degree of the ridiculous frequently seems to undercut the book's most intense efforts to be serious and dramatic. However, readers that have stuck with the series through the first three books, by now, will take the fourth volumes' mood swings in stride.

Aogiri's graphic art is once again crisp and clean. Panel layout is again occasionally confusing or too tightly zoomed to fully illustrate the frame. But this book also includes a handful of sequences that are rendered unusually well for the series, really dynamically expressing continuity and motion well in two-dimensional frames. Print quality is crisp, although the book's first four pages do appear to be the typical color serialization reprinted in monochrome for the collected edition. The translation is, once again, entirely serviceable, although not entirely free of small typos. Japanese sound effects are retained and unobtrusively translated. The book contains no nudity or sex, and minimal graphic violence. The only instance of adult language is the inclusion of "bitch," used in its literal meaning of "female breeding stock."

The fourth collected volume of Aquarion Evol is a turning point for the story. The very character-centric volume is dense with emotional turmoil, and dramatic shifts in character relationships mark notable evolutions in the plot development. Readers strictly fascinated by the Aquarion franchise's unique mecha action will be left wanting throughout this book, but typical readers that are engaged with the story and characters will likely find great satisfaction in this book's decision to finally head-on tackle many of the character-centric sub-plots that have been juggling through the prior three books.

Practical advice presented with grace and humor

"A Guide's Guide to Fly-Fishing Mistakes" takes a clever approach to instructing anglers whether novice or experienced: frame the problem by anecdote and explanation, and then present the "fix". I did not get the impression that the author's intent in writing this book was to deliver a technical dissertation or to enlighten the most learned of fly fishing afficianados. For mere mortals, an easy and entertaining read is often the best way to learn something new, and even more so when the learning is meant to be recreational. There is a lot of good common sense in this book, common sense that has been described in other works and in other ways since humans first attached a hook to a line. When faced with a stream filled with rising trout, and only half into my waders and with rod not yet strung, common sense has a way of getting left on the bank along with the gear I forgot to strap on before dashing into the water. A book like "A Guide's Guide" is a great way to reinforce basic principles and finer details when I can't fish but have time to think/dream about fishing. This book accomplishes that by a fusion of practicality, grace and humor. Highly recommended.

A Guides Guide to Fly-Fishing Mistakes

I have been fishing for over 45 years and I am a member of the IGFA, which is the International Game Fishing Assoc. and the North American Fishing Club. I have had great success fishing without the aid of a boat and will continue to do so. I have recently taken up fly fishing and with my thirst for knowledge I have read many books on the subject.

I have recently read Ms. Low's book and it is truly a great read with outstanding information on the subject. The book advised me on everything from selecting the proper equipment and how to use it, to where and when to fish. This is an exciting adventure I'm on and I thank Ms. Low for
sharing her extensive knowledge on the subject which she gained from years of fishing and being a Fly-Fishing Guide.

If you want to learn about any subject you go to the experts, and Ms. Low is one of them.

I would advised any fisherman who wants to either learn how to fly fish or become better at the sport to read this book. Its very well written and illustrated and a must read for novice to expert.

Worth buying only for the occasional laugh...

I purchased this book for my husband who is not only a devoted fly fisher completely immersed in every aspect of fly fishing, but who is also a scholar of fishing literature, old and new. Our library of books on the subject number over 400 books, books dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s and up to the current year, covering the history of fly fishing as well as technical books on fly tying. It is a rare book that he has not read on this subject matter.

My husband does not have his own Amazon account, and since I was the one who purchased this book for him, I write this review on his behalf, based on what he has told me.

In his own words, this was his initial take on this book:

"This is an extremely fundamental treatment, often sophomoric and laughably anthropomorphic, which will have questionable value even to the most rank beginner."

Much ---if not all--- of the advice contained herein has been previously published in other better written books. One cannot be certain why a book like this came to be published, but it is interesting to research the publisher and then note who has endorsed the book on the back cover. There appears to be a 'relative' connection to the publisher (Skyhorse Publishing) and at least one of the rave reviewers. I have no idea who the only other reviewer here on Amazon is (posted previously in June of 2013), but it is his only review here on Amazon, thus I wonder if he has a vested interest somehow. Or perhaps he is a friend of the author's.

Here are an example of the pseudo-wisdom you will find within, to give you an idea of the type of advice contained herein.

Ms. Low gives this advice under the title, "When the Fish Don't Respond."

"If fish are not taking the insects that are hatching, switch to a pattern known to work in that area." (p.165)

My husband's comment on this, rather lame, advice is that this situation is known as a masked hatch and its solution is discussed widely in the literature. To dismiss it as she does without further comment demonstrates a lack of knowledge on the subject matter.

But it's Ms. Low's anthropomorphic take on nature that brought about the loudest guffaws. This is what she wrote in discussing snags:

"That's why Mother Nature invented leaves and decreed that they fall from trees in autumn. Leaves float down a stream and snag on hooks. Many an unsuspecting fly fisher mistakes the tug of a maple leaf for the bite of a rainbow. It's a thrill, and you should enjoy it while it lasts. ...

"A tug on your line could be a fish or a leaf. You never know, so enjoy the thrill." (Pp. 148-149)

Ah, yes! The thrill of snagging a floating leaf down, "The river [that] has a limited time to get where it's going..." (p. 147)

Mother Nature--ever the prankster!

Unfortunately, my husband gained nothing from this book other than a moment of astonishment that it was ever published. Not only was it a waste of money on my part and valuable time on his part, but it's an embarrassment to the legions of great writers who have contributed valuable advice and wisdom to the sport. This book does not in any way embrace or respect that storied tradition.

I know that in writing this review I will elicit numerous "unhelpful" clicks as is always the case with 'critical' reviews, but please know, I am being completely honest in my assessment of this book, based on my husband's reading of it, his sharing of his opinion, and my own novice understanding of the sport. I have no personal reason to be critical of the author or the publishers of this book, knowing neither, and I write this only to provide an honest opinion of the book for the prospective buyer. If you're still interested in buying this book, I have listed our copy for resale. It's 'almost' new, read only once. Cheap.
