A Great Book of Pictoral Demonology

Not only does this book not say anything particully bad about Wicca or witchcraft, the first sentence of the chapter of Witches and Warlocks explicitly states:
"The true practicing witches of the late Middle Ages,Renaissance and later periods were most likely stubborn adherents of pre-Christian pagan religious beliefs in which the deity or deities partook of animal forms."
The reviewer who stated that it's books like these that promote religious intolerance against neopaganism obviously just took one look at the title without ever even opening the book. The pictures provide us with a great insight into the mentality of the Christian church throughout history. The favorite works are the ones depicting the four horsemen of the appocolypse. Anyone who is interested paganism, demonology, Christian history or religion in general should pick this book up. It delongs on the shelf of every neopagan for the same reason as Malleus Malificarum and Compendium Malificarum.

Devilishly Delightful Illustrated Reference Work

This book is not meant to be an introduction to Wicca or a history of witchcraft and demonology. It's intended purpose is simply to provide an illustrated reference work primarily for historians, teachers, artists, craftsman, and authors working in the area of witchcraft and demonology.

That being said, the book is divided into twelve chapters, each dealing with various aspects of witchcraft, death, demons, and the occult and providing a plentiful cornucopia of illustrations, woodcuts, copperplates, and artwork representative of the subject at hand. The works of Durer, Dore, and others appear together with illustrations from such famous demonological works such as Colin De Plancy's "Dictionnarie Infernal" and Francesco Maria Guazzo's "Compendium Maleficarum" as well as countless others from ancient to modern times.

This is a first class illustrated reference book and will be useful to any number of those interested in the history of illustration of the Dark Arts.

The BEST text on perspective for the beginner ... period.

I'm trying to return to drawing and (eventually) painting after not so much as picking up a pencil in 12 or 13 years. When I started, I read every review of every book I could find on the different subjects (basic 'seeing', basic drawing, landscapes, figure drawing, portraits, and perspective) and browsed libraries in five different counties here in NC. The list I came up with for basic texts in each subject area included 'Perspective Without Pain' and I have not been disappointed. For a relative beginner, this book is the most user-friendly manual out there in which all aspects of classic perspective is covered. What makes it especially awesome is actual user exercises to reinforce what you read. I absolutely HAVE TO HAVE exercises along with text (I'm not the brightest light in the hallway) and this book includes excellent reinforcing material. If you can find this in a library, take a quick look before you buy. For us beginners it is, in my humble opinion, perfect.

Perspective book written predominantly for artists...

This book was written with the express purpose of instructing the artist about the concepts of perspective. I've yet to encounter any object (apart from some lines for illustrative purposes, such as those leading into the vanishing points) that wasn't drawn in freehand. It seems that eyeballing (ie. approximating and estimating) the perspective applications, are the order of the day.
Like its namesake, it lives up to it by taking the reader step-by-step into the fundamental and intermediate aspects of perspecting drawing in regards to landscape and interior drawings (although this would, of course, apply to other perspective related instances). As such, it is one of my favourite books on the subject matter.
Highly recommended for artists, although engineers and architects might look elsewhere for more precise methods than those employed in the book.

Fantastic guide to one of the toughest problems for artists

As a beginning artist this book was heaven sent. One of the toughest things to learn is how to draw to make things appear to have perspective and this book takes you through a step by step process geared toward all levels of drawing. The beginner is comfortable right away with this daunting subject and the advanced student hones his skills through the study of the later chapters. It is a must for the beginner and the advanced artist alike.

"Firstly I should say I was a huge fan of the third edition, so I was eagerly awaiting this new edition. The switch from greyscale to colour makes the book and diagrams prettier that’s for sure, but isn’t a big thing for me because the content of the book is what makes it my favourite textbook. 2 new chapters have been added (the Cancer chapter is a perfect edition as veterinary oncology becomes more and more a feature of each practice’s income, and as such needs to be in each veterinarians bank of knowledge). The diagrams are (and always have been) excellent, often referenced by lecturers to explain a key concept or drill home a complicated issue. The clinical correlations and practice questions are something every text should have because they invite you to test if you have understood anything you’ve been reading, and with a large number of practice questions in the FREE online learning resource it just gets better and better. Some people say that this books old edition was too ‘wordy’ but I totally disagree, I think there is a perfect balance of pictures and text, and yes there is a lot of text, but it does cover the huge topic of Veterinary Physiology."

A basic book for Physiology

I do agree that this is a very readable book, makes quick reading before a lecture or just for revision as the chapters are divided into just a couple of pages introducing a specific topic eg. 'The Neuron', 'The Synapse'. I find the examples they use sometimes leave me scratching my head! There should be more vet-related clinical cases in my opinion.
However, if more information is required (almost always!), I have my Guyton & Hall's Textbook of Medical Physiology for reference.

This book is recommended for only people who want a brief introduction to physiology.

Good Basics and Very Readable; Breadth versus Depth

This book is well written and extremely easy to read. Chapters tend to be short and get to the point. One of only a few textbooks I have found that I don't mind reading. It explains the basics well, but it is more of a breadth versus depth approach, so as you progress through your vet courses you will realize that additional sources are needed for a complete understanding of a topic.

We have three physiology courses in our vet program during the first three semesters of school. This book was great for the first, adequate for the second but lacking quite a bit by the third.

About the Author
Sarah L. Harris is an Associate Professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She received her B.S. at B.Y.U. and her M.S. and Ph.D. from Stanford University. She has worked at Hewlett Packard, Nvidia, and various other places.

David Money Harris is the Harvey S. Mudd Professor of Engineering Design at Harvey Mudd College. He received his S.B. and M.Eng. degrees from MIT and his Ph.D. from Stanford University. He has designed chips at Intel, Hewlett Packard, Sun Microsystems, and Broadcom. When he is not teaching or designing chips, he can often be found exploring the mountains and deserts of Southern California with his three sons.

great service to the education community

This book is a great service to the education community. Being able to morph the ARM design smoothly from the earlier design / methodology we used to teach MIPS processors is great. It simplifies teaching, and I think teaching ARM is a better choice than MIPS because it is more relevant from a practical point of view.

I can't draw so this is my kind of painting instruction book

I just received this book and love it. I have bought watercolor "ready to paint" books by Wendy Jelbert before but I wanted to see if could do them in acrylic paint. At least one picture in this book is a duplicate of one from a watercolor instruction book, but that is fine with me. The patterns and instructions are great. One tiny thing is Wendy's description of hot and cold pressed papers. Since she seems to be British she calls "cold press" as NOT. I had seen this word before but had to go through several of my other books to make sure I understanding her right.
The other problem I have with the book is a little more serious. Several of the lessons in the book call for masking fluid to be applied before painting the picture. That would be fine, but the instructions say to apply it "as shown in the picture". The picture is very small, maybe 1.5"x2", and is of the traced pattern on the watercolor paper. Since the tracing is gray on white and the masking fluid appears to be a light gray I can't see it at all. On the poppy picture I can figure it out by looking at another picture of it being painted. On the foxglove picture I can't tell where it is supposed to go at all. There is another picture of hanging baskets of flowers on a building facade; that one uses lots of masking fluid and I doubt I would be able to figure out where it should go. I have emailed the printing company and asked for larger images to be emailed to me, so I will see if they respond. Acrylic paints are much more forgiving than watercolor so I would think it wouldn't be that hard to add white highlights as desired, but some darker colors are very hard to hide even with white acrylic paint.

update 11/7/2014: I emailed the publishing company yesterday about the instructions for the masking fluid pictures being too small, and I'm very happy to say that today I received an email from the editor of the book with attached pictures of the masking fluid application that I could enlarge. Isn't it nice when companies have great customer service? (Thanks, Roger.)

Fun projects to work with in this book and I would recommend buying this book if you love painting still work in flowers.I loved using the transparencies and wish there was one for each page in newer issues and the print on both sides on the book tracings. I used a overhead projector to image the outlines onto the blank canvas and found that I could get the right size and perspective this way?
Easily finished a very good work in one day with this book.

This book is an over-extended metaphor with no scientific basis or facts.

It's short compared to most books but far too long considering the lack of substance. It is essentially an assertion repeated over and over backed up with sketchy anecdotal evidence like, "Doug was in the same job for ten years..." Sure Doug was. There is even a graph at one point that the author has simply made up. I'm not even joking. He writes, "It's not hard to imagine what the drop-out curve for a marathon looks like. Probably something like this:" And then he has just drawn what he imagines the dropout curve to look like. Seriously. He just made it up. If he cared at all about the truth or facts or whether his hypothesis is correct, he would have actually done some research to find out what the dropout curve for a marathon actually looks like. But even if the central hypothesis was backed up with good evidence, no advice is given on how to recognise whether you are in a "dip" or a "cul-de-sac." This book is complete nonsense written with the substance and style of an inescapable dinner-party conversation. If I could return it for a refund I would.

Clever, witty, thought provoking, and in the end just plain food reading.

Read this book at one sitting. It reads effortlessly, is light, witty, entertaining, funny and quite profound. It challenges conventional wisdom about quitting by introducing you to the Dip. The Dip is something we all know, but may lack the courage to admit to ourselves, but if we do, the rewards for pushing through it can be game changers ( or rather life changers). Curious choices for certain examples, like that for Senseo (so few people know about it in the US, but guess that's why he chose it, right?). Additionally, found enlightening his comments and comparisons on Google and Microsoft. Two very different, but nonetheless effective ways of getting through the Dip. All in all, delightful, fun, and highly recommended

Repetitive with no real substance.

Painfully repetitive with no real insights.

The book can be summarized as:
In any endeavor, if it is a dead end, don't start.
If you can't power through to being the best, don't start
If you can power through to being the best, don't quit.

What is missing which would have made this book valuable is insights into how to better anticipate the returns and effort required in any endeavor. This foresight is what most people are lacking. Unfortunately the author waves his hands assuming that this foresight exists and provides obvious platitudes on what to do with this information
