Lovely

I'm not going to break any new ground here with this review, but I had to weigh in nevertheless to say that this was a great read, with engaging characters, written in clear, crisp, clever prose with doses of humor, tenderness, realism and everything you could want in a novel. I will be looking for other work by this author. I hope my five stars brings her back to a perfect "score" because she absolutely deserves it.

Plan B but better

What do I love about this book? Well, everything actually. I love how Maggie, the heroine, has a plan for her life and how she doesn't let a wild night stand in her way of her goals. However, Tom is so taken by her that he steps right into her plan and makes it a reality. I also really like how the reader gets to see an alternate reality of Margaret Ethridge's book Contentment. There's actually a conversation which happens here in Commitment which also takes place in Contentment. That was really cool. I like it how authors widen their worlds, so to speak, so that we get to see an event from a different perspective. I've come to really enjoy Margaret Ethridge's books. I'm not related to her, nor did she ask me to do this. I just think she is really a gifted writer, and I appreciate that she's put this book out here for the world to enjoy.

A story you will love

I had been waiting to read this book for over a year.As soon as I got the chance to I read it and somehow the magic the book had got lost.I wasnt expecting a two person point of view even though in the end I found I welcomed it.

It was slow and fast at the same time. I know it doesnt make sence so I will explain.It was fast and easy meaning that I had not realised how the time had passed from the moment I started the book until I finish it.It was slow because Maggie dont say the words I want a baby until we have read about 40% of the book. In this case that's ok since Maggie and Tom did not know the other well even though the knew each other for 15 years and it would be a little weird if the decided to have a baby together that way.So in that 40 % they develop a better relationship and learnt a few things for each other and the reader gets to know him better.
I liked the book.The characters, especially Fred, the story and everything about it.

So 5 stars for the playboy who tries to convince the girl who knew prince charming doesnt exist and still wanted him to give a chance to him and find their Happily Ever After.

About the Author

Igor Zhirkov is teaching his highly successful “System Programming Languages” course in ITMO University in Saint-Petersburg, six-time winner of the ACM-ICPC Intercollegiate World Programming Championship. He studied in Saint Petersburg Academic University and received his Master Degree from ITMO University. Currently he is doing research in verified C refactorings as part of his PhD thesis and formalization of Bulk Synchronous Parallelism library in C at IMT Atlantique in Nantes, France. Does Not Capture The Magic Of Autumn Falls

Autumn's Kiss was an attempt by the author to capture the magic of the Autumn Falls, but this one falls short of expectations. With the diary out of commission, Autumn's only option is to make her own decisions and continue the friendships she forged when first relocating to town. Predictably, Autumn makes a mess of things, but will an unexpected turn of events help to get her back on track?

I wonder how Autumn had any friends when she used to live in Maryland, as now she does not seem to be able to figure it out without the help of the supernatural. The first book was charming, but this one felt like the author was trying too hard. I really like the character of Autumn, so I will be reading the next book, but Autumn's Kiss was a miss for me.

"Oh my goodness, I was sooooo excited to get this book (on early realease too by like a day) and I started to read as soon as I bought it. This book, to me, was amazingly written with a lot of intense moments and tough decisions and a lot of other exciting things as well. I indulged reading this book because it caught my attention right away. I would definitely recommend this book who are into teen novels with intense moments and relatable moments. Can't wait for the next one!!!!!!"

I'd recommend it to every artist!

This is a fantastic book on perspective. It was recommended to me by an artist friend, and I in turn recommended it to a college art teacher I to help her with students who were having a hard time with the subject matter.

It goes over everything you could ever want to know about perspective in wonderful, glorious, humorously illustrated detail. The material is approachable, it doesn't seem daunting, academic, overly precise or mathematic. I'd recommend it to every artist, and I think every artist can learning something from it, not just those drawing comic books.

One of the Two Perspective Books You'd Need to Get It

In my opinion, the only perspective book (of the many I've looked through) that covers practically EVERYTHING is Vanishing Point by Jason Cheeseman-Meyer; that one goes into just about every possible variety, and really digs deeply into technique, but he glosses over things too quickly and moves on, and can leave you puzzled, not explaining WHY something should work, just believe it or leave it; I like Chelsea's book because he takes more time to explain things in a clear and understandable manner (tho he does spend way too much time on some of the very basic and obvious concepts; how hard is it to understand that objects get smaller in the distance?) but he doesn't go as far as Cheeseman-Meyer into such things as curvilinear.
I think the two books together could just about cover it for anyone really trying to learn and understand perspective. When you can't figure out what an author says, it helps to read another author's explanation of the same subject, and these two complement each other well.

Probably the best perspective book yet for any artist!

I am a professional artist with a fairly complete resume...and library! So I feel as though I can speak about this book with some amount of experience behind my words.
I actually happened on this book as I really don't draw comics at all (I paint with my own hand-ground paints using methodology based on Renaissance techniques). Since I teach classical art and hadn't had time to draw up worksheets as I usually do about perspective for my students, I was searching bookshelves for a good text book to hand them. That's when I found this book...and I'm so glad that I did. Even people who don't paint even seem to enjoy reading it! The book is very well written and entertaining...everyone will learn something from it whether you've worked at your art for a day, a year or a lifetime. It takes the intimidating factors away from the theories of perspective. Adults can easily read it and kids are drawn to it in a second...a sneaky way to learn "complex" theories by reading "the funny pages"!

Howard Eichenbaum (Ph.D. University of Michigan) is a University Professor at Boston University, where he is also the Director of the Center for Memory and Brain and the chairman of the Department of Psychology. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in neuroscience at M.I.T, and he has held previous academic positions at Wellesley College, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. His research focuses on how memories are represented and organized in the brain to support our capacity for conscious recollection. He has published over 170 papers, reviews, and commentaries as well as two edited volumes and three monographs including Memory, Amnesia and the Hippocampal System (1993), From Conditioning to Conscious Recollection: Memory Systems of the Brain (2001), and The Cognitive Neuroscience of Memory: An Introduction (2002). Major focus is given on analog behavior, design criteria and their concept rather than design themselves, such as voltage/current reference, some of the basic key analog design properties such as gain, band width, basics of jitter, eye diagram, etc. Chapter 3: Digital Design Fundamentals In this chapter, we explain digital design flow, combinational and sequential logic design fundamentals, design for testability, concepts of timing, and timing verification. Chapter 4: Analog Verification This chapter focuses on analog performance verification and functional verification under the context of mixed signal design hierarchical verification rather than the detail performance analysis of the designs themselves. Chapter 5: Digital Design Verification This chapter explains the tools and methodologies that are evolved over the period that are predicated on predictable quality and verification efficiency. The chapter contains the sections on the coverage driven verification (CDV) methodology, assertion based verification (ABV) methodology, and overview of the CDV using Open Verification Methodology (OVM). Chapter 6: Analog-Mixed Signal Verification This chapter discusses about the AMS verification phases, choosing the right abstraction of DUT for a given verification challenge, AMS verification planning, testplanning for AMS design verification, and testbench development with re-use in mind. Chapter 7: Analog Behavioral Modeling This chapter explains about the applications of analog behavioral models, modeling methodology, simple examples of various analog behavioral modeling styles, selection of accuracy level of the models based on the verification plan, model verification, and signoff. Chapter 8: Low Power Verification The purpose of this chapter is to explain the low power design verification challenges, key low power design elements, low power design techniques, low power design and verification cycle, testplanning for low power design verification, power aware digital, and AMS simulations.

One and only mixed-signal verification book that utilizes the digital verification methodology (OVM) while using a concrete example (SATA-PHY) throughout the book. This book covers the wide range of verification topics, ranging from digital verification and model validation, to analog verification in early chapters. Chapter 6 and subsequent chapters cover more AMS aspect. Since there is really no standard yet for mixed-signal verification and its features/environment/flow are EDA vendor specific, this book provides a high-level but comprehensive overview to all the components of mixed-signal verification.

The author is very knowledgeable and has written one of the only books on this subject. However, the printing quality is so poor, I can't tell what's going on in many of the figures. Also since English is clearly not the author's first language, some editing would be very helpful.

I didn't like this book as much because I'm not a scientific thinker and I struggle with reading historical accounts. However, this book is well-written and interesting--just for someone else, not the likes of me.

Bolivia Today

An excellent work. It is an example of serious historical scholarship about the important changes in Bolivia. Don't be put off by the alphabet soup of the different parties involved; there is a list of acronyms at the end of the book. The history of valient indigenous resistance to oppression is a fact of life in our hemisphere that most Northamericans are ignorant of (excepting of course Native Americans). I witnessed much of this and was thrilled to see the progress in this country where my wife and children were born. My time there led me to write the book that is linked to this review. I dedicated it to Luis Espinal, a hero who fell in the struggle to bring about the changes that are beginning to be seen in the country.

The Dynamics of Military Revolution bridges a major gap in the emerging literature on revolutions in military affairs. It suggests that two very different phenomena have been at work over the past centuries: "military revolutions," which are driven by vast social and political changes, and "revolutions in military affairs," which military institutions have directed, although usually with great difficulty and ambiguous results. MacGregor Knox and Williamson Murray provide a conceptual framework and historical context for understanding the patterns of change, innovation, and adaptation that have marked war in the Western world since the fourteenth century--beginning with Edward III's revolution in medieval warfare, through the development of modern military institutions in seventeenth-century France, to the military impact of mass politics in the French Revolution, the cataclysmic military-industrial struggle of 1914-1918, and the German Blitzkrieg victories of 1940. About the Author
MacGregor Knox has served as Stevenson Professor of International History at the London School of Economics and Political Science since 1994. He was educated at Harvard College (BA, 1967) and Yale University (PhD in History, 1977), and has also taught at the University of Rochester (USA). His writings deal with the wars and dictatorships of the savage first half of the twentieth century and with contemporary international and strategic history, and include Mussolini Unleashed, 1939 1941 (1982); The Making of Strategy: Rulers, States, and War (edited, with Williamson Murray and Alvin Bernstein, 1994); Common Destiny: Dictatorship, Foreign Policy, and War in Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany (2000); The Dynamics of Military Revolution, 1300 2050 (edited, with Williamson Murray, 2001); and To the Threshold of Power: Origins and Dynamics of the Fascist and National Socialist Dictatorships (2007). Between his undergraduate and graduate studies he spent three years in the US Army, and served in the Republic of Vietnam (1969) as rifle platoon leader with the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

Williamson Murray is Professor Emeritus in the Department of History at Ohio State University and the Ambassador Anthony D. Marshall Chair of Strategic Studies at Marine Corps University, as well as a defense consultant and commentator on historical and military subjects in Washington, DC. His most recent books are Successful Strategies (edited with Richard Hart Sinnreich) and The Iran-Iraq War (written with Kevin Woods), both published by Cambridge in 2014, and War, Strategy, and Military Effectiveness and Military Adaptation in War, both published by Cambridge in 2011. The Heart of Asymmetric Advantage is NOT Technology

This is the only serious book I have been able to find that addresses revolutions in military affairs with useful case studies, a specific focus on whether asymmetric advantages do or do not result, and a very satisfactory executive conclusion. This book is strongly recommended for both military professionals, and the executive and congressional authorities who persist in sharing the fiction that technology is of itself an asymmetric advantage.

It merits emphasis that the author's first conclusion, spanning a diversity of case studies, is that technology may be a catalyst but it rarely drives a revolution in military affairs--concepts are revolutionary, it is ideas that break out of the box.

Their second conclusion is both counter-intuitive (but based on case studies) and in perfect alignment with Peter Drucker's conclusions on successful entrepreneurship: the best revolutions are incremental (evolutionary) and based on solutions to actual opponents and actual conditions, rather than hypothetical and delusional scenarios of what we think the future will bring us. In this the authors mesh well with Andrew Gordon's masterpiece on the rules of the game and Jutland: we may be best drawing down on our investments in peacetime, emphasizing the education of our future warfighters, and then be prepared for massive rapid agile investments in scaling up experimental initiatives as they prove successful in actual battle.

The book is noteworthy for its assault on fictional scenarios and its emphasis on realism in planning--especially valuable is the authors' staunch insistence that only honesty, open discussion among all ranks, and the wide dissemination of lessons learned, will lead to improvements.

Finally, the authors are in whole-hearted agreement with Colin Gray, author of Modern Strategy, in stating out-right that revolutions in military affairs are not a substitute for strategy as so often assumed by utopian planners, but merely an operational or tactical means.

This is a brilliant, carefully documented work that should scare the daylights out of every taxpayer--it is nothing short of an indictment of our entire current approach to military spending and organization. As the author's quaintly note in their understated way, in the last paragraph of the book, "the present trend is far from promising, as the American government and armed forces procure enormous arsenals only distantly related to specific strategic needs and operational and tactical employment concepts, while continu[ing], in the immortal words of Kiffin Rockwell, a pilot in the legendary First World War Lafayette Escadrille, to 'fly along, blissfully ignorant, hoping for the best.'"

Lest the above be greeted with some skepticism, let us note the 26 October 2001 award of $200 billion to Lockheed for the new Joint Strike Fighter calls into serious question whether the leadership in the Pentagon understands the real world--the real world conflicts of today--all 282 of them (counting 178 internal conflicts) will require the Joint Strike Fighter only 10% of the time--the other 90% of our challenges demand capabilities and insights the Pentagon is not only not capable of fielding, it simply refuses to consider them to be "real war." Omar Bin Laden beat the Pentagon on 11 September 2001, and he (and others who follow in his footsteps) will continue to do so until we find a military leadership that can lead a real-world revolution in military affairs.... rather than a continuing fantasy in which the military-industrial complex lives on regardless of how many homeland attacks we suffer.

Technology alone just doesn't cut it....

This book contains an awful lot of wisdom for such a slim volume (it clocks in at just under 200 pages).
The authors examine the natures of military revolutions and RMA (a very hot topic that has arguably produced more hot air than substance) and provide a number of case studies examining the issues and testing the authors' views through history.
The case studies are;
- The English in the 14th century
- 17th century France
- The French Revolution
- The American Civil War
- The Prussian RMA, 1840-1871
- The Battlefleet Revolution
- The First World War
- Blitzkrieg 1940
The various case studies are backed up by an extremely satisfying introduction and a thorough, well argued conclusion which fires one or two shots across the bows of those residents of the Pentagon who may be suffering from technology-centric tunnel vision. The authors (very distinguished bunch, it should be said) warn against the idea that Clausewitzian truths regarding such issues as friction can be discounted thanks to the wonders of technology and indeed make clear that they are as important as ever.
The various case studies work extremely well as concise stand-alone works on their various historical periods, even if RMA is not your hot topic. Especially good are the chapters on the English in the 14th century and on the Battlefleet Revolution (and the inner workings of the Imperial German Navy and the Royal Navy during this period).
This is a well written, interesting book which should annoy all the right people.

A unique experience...

... a book that is both required reading AND interesting!

The Dynamics of Military Revolution looks at the evolution of military power and does it very well. This book looks at Military Revolutions (which had wide-ranging impacts on social and political matters as well as military) and Revolutions in Military Affairs (which are characterized by new weapons, tactics and other military innovations and which can contribute to Military Revolutions).

If you're looking for a theory that explains why new weapons systems aren't always revolutionary, or how something as simple as paying your troops for a change can result in a major shift in military power, then this is a book you want to read. It includes a lot of good writing and the reasoning behind it is impeccable. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough.
