About the Author
Ronald Dunn was in ministry for more than thirty years before his death in the summer of 2001. In 1975, he left the pastorate to found Lifestyle Ministries, an organization that promotes conferences and produces Bible study tapes for missionaries, lay people, and students. Dunn traveled forty weeks each year -- mostly to churches --holding conferences and frequently speaks overseas. Dunn has also served as an adjunct professor at two seminaries. He is the author of several books, including the popular "Don't Just Stand There ... Pray Something."

"When Heaven Is Silent" by Ron Dunn is an excellent for anyone needing encouragement that God cares, even when He is apparently silent during the tough times we go through.

Some of the points he mentions include:

1. Looking for the quick fix and easy path puts us in bondage.
2. Faith has the courage to see things the way they are.
3. Often there is a mixture of good and evil in our lives.
4. We need to accept life's mysteries and that some things will remain unanswered.
5. Egocentric people are miserable human beings.
6. You can trust God and still get hurt.
7. The worst kind of loneliness is feeling abandoned by God.
8. The "dark night of the soul" is an inevitable and legitimate experience for every Christian.
9. When you don't know what to do, keep walking in faith.
10. Put your confidence in God instead of your experience or ability.

The title contains excellent content and is peppered with several instances of humor - an important asset to have in life.

Read, enjoy, and be encouraged and challenged to fix your focus on Jesus Christ instead of yourself.

Dealing With the Death of a Son

I first read this book some years ago while I was trying to come to grips with the suicide of my son. This book was very helpful to me in facing this tragic event. Although the book is out of print, it is well worth your while to chase down a copy particularly if you are dealing with the loss of a loved one. Ron Dunn discusses in an honest and open manner the emotions and pain of dealing with situations in which God doesn't answer prayers as we expected. It was a great encouragement to me to realize that I was not alone in some of the struggles with God that I went through. I have never forgotten Ron's admonition to not ask "Why?", but instead ask "What Now?".

The Lover and the Goddess

A Lover’s Return is the final installment in Altonya Washington’s Ramsey/Tesano series and it was a page turner that I could not put down. In this last installment Hilliam Tesano is now ready to return back to the fold and finally put an end to the threat that impacted so many lives. He also realizes that before he can put an end to the threat, he needs to find out why the woman he loved left him without a word years ago. He knows he should hate her but love is a powerful thing and he wants to have that again. Persephone has always wanted Hilliam Tesano and only knew true happiness when they were together. Events have kept these two from each other for years and now Persephone knows Hill will harbor hate toward her when he discovers she has been raising their children without his knowledge. Now Hill and Persephone’s paths have crossed again and now join forces with the others to reveal secrets and finally eliminate the mastermind behind the ugliness they witnessed in this saga. Will Hill forgive and understand Persephone’s reason for flight? Will he be able to end the threat so that the Ramsey/Tesano clans find peace? Readers will need to download A Lover’s Return to find out the explosive conclusion.

I must say I have been anticipating Hill and Persephone’s story and Ms. Washington definitely did not disappoint with this final installment. She did an outstanding job with character development as we saw in Black Island when we learned of Hill and Persephone’s back story, to now see how these characters have evolved years later. Persephone is trying to find a way to tell Hill about his children and prays he does not hate her for it. While Hill is trying to not to hate Persephone for leaving the way she did. Hill is also wrestling with decision to return back into the family business uncover, to finally put a stop to the madness his uncles put into motion years ago. The storyline flowed and was engaging from beginning to end. Ms. Washington had several storylines to tie up in this installment and she did an amazing job. Readers will laugh, cry and cheer throughout this book as we catch up with the Ramseys & Tesanos. I truly did not want to see this book end but hats off to Ms. Washington for bringing this series to an explosive end with Hill and Persephone. There are a lot of surprises in this book. Overall outstanding read.

Great End to Spectacular Series

What a wonderful series. Thank you so much for not dumbing down this series. The complexity of characters and relationships was phenomenal. I loved that readers had to take the time to piece the relationships together. If you haven't read the previous books, it's difficult to appreciate the the nuances of some of the revelations.

It is well worth the time. I was astounded that Hill understood and forgave Perry for her big reveal.This book revealed all the secrets and then some. This wrap up was so intense and so full bodied.

I love that this book and series was generational. It reminds us that those before us have a great effect on us and our children. I'm not doing justice to just how sweeping in scope this book was. There was sadness, laughter, suspense and great family bonding. I recommend this entire series. Ms. Washington, I have enjoyed your writing for years. This book was confirmation for me why whenever, I see your name on a book, I don't hesitate to buy it.

There are a few writers like you, Brenda Jackson and Francis Ray that I really really appreciate because your writings set the standard for writers to come.

This is the last installment of the famous Ramsey / Tesano Series by Altonya Washington.
To tell you the truth I don’t know where to begin. This series has taken me on an emotional rollercoaster ride from Book 1 (A Lover’s Dream) to Book 20 (A Lover’s Return). If you begin to read a book and while you are reading you feel as if you part of the book so much so where you feel and see the reaction of each characters as you are reading then this is THAT BOOK. A Lover’s Return is the story of Hill Tesano and Persephone James, and if you read A Lover’s Origin (Black Island) then you will see how Hill & Persephone met and fell in love.

From the moment you begin reading this book you will either be sitting there shaking your head or you will have your hands to your mouth because you can’t believe what is happen. After seeing each other again old feeling has resurface for this couple but until they under the past how could they have a future. You can clearly see that after all the years apart that they still are very much in love with each other, but Hill has to find out why Persephone left and after years of being apart Persephone has some news she needs to share with Hill, as she struggle with how and when to tell Hill, she can’t help but wonder how he will take this news.

This series has many plots and twist and turn and this book is no different. Hill & Persephone will find themselves working together again. This book takes you on the journey of Hill and Sef finding their way back to each other. They embark on bring down this organization once and for all. You will get to see the AWESOME way Altonya brought it all HOME. There are heart felt apologizes, reunions and babies, babies, babies.
A LOVER’S RETURN, the title says it all…..Either way Hill & Persephone return to each other and now that the past has been resolved they are looking forward to the future……….and what a future it is going to be. What a way to end a series with all the burning questions answers and few SURPRISES as WELL. I ALWAYS HAVE QUESTIONS AFTER READING THIS SERIES AND YES I DO HAVE QUESTIONS…………WILL ASK MS. WASHINGTON THESE QUESTIONS IN PRIVATE……..I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

OH BY THE WAY THIS MAN IS 6'8 ALL BRONZE AND SEXY AS ALL GET OUT........................LOVE SCENE...HOT...WATER...HOT.....WATER, KEEP SOME BY YOU.

In this intermittently amusing but excessively long sequel to How to Be Idle: A Loafer's Manifesto, British author and editor (the Idler) Hodgkinson states upfront that his goal is to present a philosophy for everyday life based on freedom, merriment and responsibility, or anarchy. Asserting that before the Reformation, England was one non-stop party, he wants to overthrow modern Puritans and return to an approach to life that is basically having a laugh, doing what you want—and he provides alternatives to the many ills of the modern world such as those listed in the book's title. The main problem is that many of Hodgkinson's topics end up being played for easy laughs—in one chapter titled Forget Government, the message is Stop Voting, while in another on Submit No More to the Machine, Use Your Hands, his main advice is Use a Scythe. When he does try to move beyond laughs and explain how his philosophy can cause a radical redefinition of human relationships based on local needs instead of global capitalism, he never quite explores how this would happen in the real world, relying instead on grand statements (in a chapter called Stop Working, Start Living) such as A spade, a saw and a chisel, that is all you need to be free. Good read for the person who is doing too much and needs to find happiness and be fulfilled

So not a perfect book. I would not follow it word for word, but it is good to help you stop and assess what is going on in your life. It will help find things that are just distractions in this life. This is a very personal decision, and what works for me will not work for you, but this book will help you stop an think about the stuff that gets in the way of life. The authors point in a very small nut shell, there are plenty of things that we initially think we need, but they can take over you life and ultimately can distract you from what you really want to do.

He likes writing manifestos

This book was excellent at first, then it frustrated, then it wavered between those two emotions for the remaining pages. About halfway through he acknowledges how someone could view his ideas as contradictory. For example, he juxtaposes Chapter 17 "In Praise of Melancholy" with Chapter 18 "Stop Moaning; Be Merry." That's fine, but the changes come quickly, and they don't compliment one another as well as they could. Sometimes the chapters feel like they are unfinished or could have gone deeper rather wider in reference across different texts. (The added section at the end titled "Further Reading" gives you a clue about his desire to let you know he's read many books in preparing this book. And yet, he seems to include books he found bland, but spent time looking through. Why do you want someone to do a lot of reading to tell you what's worth a shoulder shrug?)

I thought he was at his best when he was praising the will of the individual to find and create his own happiness, to break free of controls like government or the debilitating pangs of guilt. But then he talks about how people should live in communes and many other pieces of advice that seem to directly restrain the individual. Moreover, it's strange that he rails against external control and advocates freedom, while putting commands at the end of each chapter, like "Start a Guild" or "Cut Up Your Credit Card." When he's telling me things I should do to be free, one of which is "Say yes," the word that kept coming to me was "no."

A lot of his chapters could have been contained inside other chapters. For example, "Chapter 8: Stop Competing" was weak, and the negative sentiments could have gone in "Chapter 4: Reject Career and All Its Promise" and the positive sentiments could have gone in "Stop Working, Start Living," the last chapter on play. Or, they could have all been combined in one extended chapter on the complexities of work. So it comes off as being somewhat sloppy and pandering, even though the book is strongest when it sheds all consideration for what people think. Ironically, if he'd refined his philosophy and made it shorter (or "simpler"), I think it would have been stronger. As it is, the 29 chapters have large doses of filler.

Still, this was a fun book to read and think about and there are good ideas here. You have to find what you like and not get worked up over the abrupt changes in philosophical direction. Take what you like, leave what you don't. But if you needed me to tell you that, I wonder how much help this book could please you.

I loved this book so much I buy it for family and friends as gifts. Its a very easy read with practical tips and advice as well as good humor. I've probably read this book 20 times, its very easy to randomly open it up and start reading.

Fantastic For Anyone With An Interest In History

I thought this was great. The description of her childhood was enchanting. (Sleigh rides into town in winter because there were no cars yet.) Born in the 1890s many of the boys she knew died in WW I. Cover of Time in 1926. Husband Lord Of the Admiralty two terms before Churchill. Lots of very erudite letters. The description of preparations for WW II will blow you away. Planting vegetable gardens. Taking down all the street and road signs to confuse the invaders who never came. Taking the distributor cap out of your car so invaders couldn't use it. Living in France after the war. I loved it and it's hard to believe she is not a professional writer. The descriptions of ordinary things are mesmerizing.

A peek at a princess in a troubled time

Regarded as "the greatest beauty of her age," for Americans this book is a peek at English nobility in hard times, after England had lost so many of its promising young in World War I. It is a well-written account of that time between the wars from a celebrity under fire. My interest in Diana Cooper was her experience at Oxford at the time the Russian Prince Felix Yusupov was there, not too long before he returned to Russia and murdered Rasputin. Her accounts of the Prince's antics there, and her later meetings, along with husband Duff Cooper, with the Prince Felix and his wife and the famous Rembrandts is a chapter in my book, "The Lady with an Ostrich Feather Fan." An exciting read.

Great autobiography

"The Rainbow Comes and Goes," the first volume in the author's three-part account of her life, is definitely one of the best autobiographies I've ever read (and I've read Augustine's "Confessions" and the unabridged Casanova). Lady Diana has a remarkable talent for revealing herself as a distinct, unique personality; the daughter of a duke, she also gives a fine description of her aristocratic Edwardian girlhood. "Rainbow" is so good that I'm looking forward to reading the subsequent two volumes of her story.

One of the best summary books from chemometrics.

Nowadays the science and research of the quantitative relationhips between chemical structure of compounds and their physico-chemical, chromatographic (or any other scientifically measurable) behaviour are in the ascendant. This rising begun with the wide-spread of cheap computational capacity and resulting the development of many new multivariate mathematical-statistical methods. These are more and more refined and more and more easier to use them and give more and more information to the hand of scientists. The main problem, however, still exists: there is no statistically acceptable mmethod for measuring the significance level of multivariate methods. Therefore it is basically important for anybody, who wants to use multivariate methods to draw inferences from its results, to exactly know its mathematical background and employment fields.
These books are extremely useful for anybody who wants to learn about the newest methods and to use more suitably the 'older' ones. Finally, this opus is worthy continuation of Chatfield & Collins's book of "Introduction to Multivariate Analysis" and hoping become a basic handbook for any scientists.

Invincible (3 of series)

What a wonderful conclusion to this layered, thrilling adventure series. I have loved the characters since book 1, and was so happy to see Hayden's PoV added to Invincible. There are a lot of twists, turns, and revelations in this final book, and the love between Mason and Olivia is so strong and resolute. I enjoy Gladden's writing and am sad to see this trilogy completed.

Great ending, but still open for a future pop in book..I hope.. DelSheree Gladden finishes the trilogy of Mason, an Alien and his Escort Olivia, childhood friends that become something more as they fall in love, and must fight to get Mason home in time on his 18th birthday. Failure means the deaths of all that have attempted teaching and caring for him, to reach his powers. They race to make it and a fierce battle at the moment he must leave, thinking they succeeded to thwart Robin a teen that is playing for the side of evil, only to have Robin grab Olivia's hair at the last moment and is taken with them to the alien world. Her trick will weaken the barrier between both worlds. Shocked Mason and Olivia have now been tasked to save both worlds and must go back taking Robin and another alien girl Slone with them. Blessed by the son, one of a set of twins of the of the power hungry Goddess, they must find her and defeat the remaining twin, killing Alien Children on earth. They soon discover that no side is telling the whole truth. They discover they must kill the Gods that have made both worlds, and their remaining twin son. That the greed for power is driving the deaths of innocent children, sapping the power from the alien world and if they don't do something both worlds will fall. They rush from place to place with the power of the one twin, the only one that didn't want power for the sake of power, searching for the Gods, and the evil twin. The Mother and Father Gods, and the remaining twin son all who want the power to control the worlds and don't care who dies to get it. Mason and Olivia and their closest friends Hayden and Slone clash in a devastating battle that they must win, because both worlds depend on them. One will die trying to complete the mission. While the trilogy is finished I sincerely hope at some point Ms Gladden writes a book that jumps forward ten years and gives us a glimpse of where the characters are, what has failed, or succeeded, how it all finishes in the whole story with a little polish. The series is suitable for teens, tweens and adults.. There is drama, twists and turns and success and failure, all that are faced and not runaway from. The story weaved is great and just captures you from cover to cover. I recommend the book 100%, and look forward to gifting a copy to a niece who is a reader and a space fan.

What a great series!

What a great series!! As I began this book, which is book 3, I had my own ideas of how I wanted it to end. Although it didn't happen quite the way I wanted, I was very happy with how it did end for the characters I had grown to know! I do wish, however, there had been one more chapter to show us or tell what happens from here...maybe a "5 years later" update. I think there is still so much more than could be done. Maybe there will be another one, I don't know.

I also would have liked to know a little more about what happened to Robin! Maybe I wanted to see her get her "justice" for what she did! LOL

I read the kindle version and found that between 60-70% there were so many edit errors, it was almost distracting from the story. I didn't like that. It was hard to follow during those times and I think it was the editing rather than the story.

Adequate, but full of errors

I must first admit this is a topic that I only have a mild interest in. The strengths of the book are that there are many worked examples, as well as proofs. There are also answers to most of the problems. The bad news is many of the answers are wrong. Newer printings have corrected many mistakes but a fair number remain. Before using this book download a .pdf file of the errata. You can find this by searching the key words Promislow & errata. The errata lists over 300 errors and is still not complete.

Good introduction to the topic

Before buying this book I had never had any exposure to actuarial mathematics. I was looking for a good introduction that would fit my mathematical skills (PhD Economist feeling comfortable with applied mathematics but lacking the training in mathematical to do proofs or anything similar). Promislow's book fully met my expectations and increased my interest for the subject. In fact I have purchased more books since.

It is true that the title is a little misleading as the book's primary topic is life insurance. However, there are three or four chapter dealing with risk theory providing a good introduction. What I found best in this book are the numerous exercises with answers in the back of the book. This allowed me to test my understanding of the subject and also what is important in each chapter. In some chapters it is not straightforward to see where the author is heading, however, the exercises compensated very well for this.

All in all I can warmly recommend this book to anyone who has a good background in mathematical economics at the level of Varian (Microeconomic Analysis) and who wants to get a good introduction into the topic.

This book is an excellent text on special relativity. It is not for beginners as it is not an introduction with lots of examples. It is, however, a excellent reference when reviewing the subject or getting solutions to common kinematic problems. It is too bad it is not in print at this time as it it often quoted as the text to use for solving problems in relativity for physicist.

Refreshing Viewpoint

Originating from a set of lectures given by the author at CERN, 1961-1962,
this book delivers the material from a refreshing point of view.
Blurb in New Scientist (Oct 1963) states: " Shows how many kinematic problems can be most easily
solved by describing them first in a frame of reference where they become simple and then setting up the
covariant, or invariant, generalization of that particular description."
Author: "...fills a gap between high-brow theory and the daily work in the laboratory."
Complete solutions are provided to some of the problem sets.
The first Chapter is a delightful exposition of Lorentz Transformations and Invariants (use made of ict).
Chapter Eight: Considerations on Relativistic Notation, author spends some time discussing alternative notation
used in the literature-- defining terms such as metric tensor, covariant, contravariant components ---ending with
the Electromagnetic Field Tensor.
Ninth Chapter discusses precession of the polarization of spin-one-half particle moving in electromagnetic field.
