Great read!
By Adam
I purchased this script after checking it out from our university's library. The story is enjoyable and can help you realize how you truly should appreciate things, and live in the moment since life could be snatched away in the blink of an eye. For those in theatre, it has a few monologues which could be used, as well as scenes.

Physical condition was rather good on delivery. The side of the script was a little sun damaged, but other than that it came in good condition. The shipping company did not follow through the best, as this script and several other books I purchased came uncovered. It had been raining when the package was delivered, so it was a good thing a family member was able to get it before the books became soaked.

Overall, product is great! Delivery, not quite as great, but still on time.

A chicken tractor is a bottomless, portable pen that fits over your garden beds. Just set it wherever you need help in your garden. The chickens peck and scratch the soil to clean your beds, eat pest bugs and weed seeds. Best of all, they provide eggs and meat with that old-fashioned flavor. Chicken tractors have helped thousands of gardeners have better gardens and taken chickens out of factory farms and put them in the garden where they are your personal helpers.

could be helped by editing
By B. St Pierre
Bottom line: This could have been a great book, but it reads like a first draft -- almost as rough as raw notes from the authors' field notebook. It is useful reading to get ideas about how to put this system to work for you.

My family is going to get a handful of egg layers and I heard about the chicken tractor concept and wanted to get the authoritative guide. I was hoping for (a) building instructions and rough plans, (b) how the system is best used, and (c) basic care of the animals. I didn't expect a comprehensive guide to animal care, I'll get a separate book for that.

The book covers all three of the above areas.

Chapter 8, "How to Build Your Custom Chicken Tractor" has a sequence of instructions, a bill of materials, and a couple of diagrams. The diagrams could be better, and there could be more. A third of a page is devoted to a picture of how to square two boards using the 3-4-5 rule, but the next page of seven construction steps has no pictures at all. There is no (nearby) photograph of the finished product, only some sketches with cartoon chickens. Chapter 4 focuses on straw bale construction techniques (though you can't build a tractor out of bales) with more and somewhat better diagrams but does not have a set of specific construction steps (and I'm not sure it needs one).

Chapter 3, "Chicken Tractor Systems", discusses seven different systems in which the tractor may be used. Not all of the systems are covered evenly: the rotational garden system gets four paragraphs in contrast to the dozen or so pages for the deep mulch system. One "system" is a brief mention of four different hen houses on wheels without any mention of how wheels might be deployed in contrast to the simple tractor he describes later in Chapter 8.

Basic care is scattered throughout the book. Chapter 6, "Keeping Hens in the Chicken Tractor" has some tips about keeping hens happy but doesn't go into much depth. It could be better integrated with the rest of the book: the section on nesting boxes should include details or cross reference to construction techniques for integrating nesting boxes into the Chapter 8 tractor. In 300 pages about "happy hens and healthy soil", there are only two or three pages devoted to nesting boxes, and then there are no diagrams -- just a couple of silly cartoons.

Some info on breed selection would have been nice. Chapter 11, "Give Me That Old-Time Chicken", discusses the fact that some heritage breeds are in danger of extinction. But other than positing that they taste better, they don't give much for hints in selecting a breed that is appropriate for your farm.

Some miscellaneous criticisms:

* Selective use of science makes me suspicious. There are places where the authors cite scientific studies in support of their opinions. There are places where the authors make vague mention of science in support of their opinions. And there are places where the authors mention scientific studies and then dismiss the science based on their opinions.

* The photography is poor -- generally too dark and not well composed.

* Organization is inconsistent. This is a minor point, but some chapters have numbered sections, some have lettered sections, some have no sequence marks -- just section titles, and some chapters are mix and match. Example: Chapter six has sections A, B, C, D, 5. Only A and B show up in the table of contents. Sloppy organization makes it unlikely that this book will be useful as a reference.

* Hordes of typographical/copy errors. Again, a minor point but distracting nonetheless. Example: Page 38 has a diagram/cartoon at the top of the page, titled in large print "Products and Behviors (sic) of a Chicken".

* Poor indexing. Example: the index for "killing cone" references only page 202. But the chapter on processing has multiple references to killing cone. There's a diagram/cartoon on page 209, description of its use on page 216, and thoughts on different types of killing cones including some thoughts on homemade versus commercial on page 217.

* The authors are very repetitive. They could shave 100 pages with better organization and judicious use of cross-references. Example: Chapter 5, "Soil Building with Chicken Tractors" is part rant against the destruction of soil by monoculture farming and part repetition of information mostly found in other parts of the book about the use of tractor systems for improving garden soil.

Very good for the suburban gardener
By A Customer
I originally got some chickens because Martha Stewart said they love to eat crickets and here in the desert we have quite a problem with crickets. I found out that chickens are wonderful pets, not much trouble, very friendly and they have personalities. And they really eat bugs - best pest control you can have. I read this book on the concept of the chicken tractor and realized for the suburban gardener this is ideal. Hens eat bugs, grain, and vegetable scraps from the kitchen. Hens are great little composters, and they eat weed seeds and pests up to and including scorpions and baby mice and snakes. They don't need much except food and water, and protection from predators. We allow ours to roam a fenced in yard freely, and pen them up at night. This is a useful book if you just want a few hens and want to improve your soil (we don't move our hens around, once a year we take 4 inches off the soil in their yard and spread it around our trees and gardens.) The eggs are great - I like giving green eggs to little kids because they all have read Dr. Seuss. This book isn't for someone who is more interested in egg-laying or meat production on a large scale. And, by the way, we don't eat our hens. We are running a chicken retirement home - they don't lay eggs any more, but they still till, compost, eat weed seeds, and control pests.

backyard experience
By R. Averett
This book is a great help in getting started with chickens. When building the tractor, be sure to double check the given measurements as I found the top of the tractor to be about 4 inches too short.

A very different drawing book
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:mo3GGHHIDG4J7I5]]This book takes a rather academic approach to teach drawing. By academic, I mean lots of text and instructions with not much visuals.

While the instructions are clear and easy to follow, the lessons would be more fun and impactful with more illustrated examples.

Say for example, there's a section where it talks about values and the different effects that result. It's difficult to feel the effect when you're just reading about them and can't see them, although I must say that there are exercises in the book where you practice creating those values. Half the book are instructions with blank space for you to draw on so I guess you'll have lots of practice.

By the way, the most important pages in the book are pages 10 and 11 on drawing what you see by measuring and judging the relationship between spaces and points. Many of the later lessons use the techniques taught in those two pages.

Personally for me, I prefer a book on drawing instructions with lots of drawing, such as Bert Dodson's Keys to Drawing, or even Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards which has lots of text too. I guess I'm not particularly inspired by this book because it does not show what you can achieve after going through the lessons -- there aren't a lot of visual examples as I've mentioned.

Before you buy, I highly recommend you use Amazon's Look Inside feature to preview the pages.

Ignore your fears and just DRAW!
By Jennifer Kyrnin
I am still working my way through this book, but I like it. At first I was a bit nervous to start drawing in the book, but then I realized that that is what it's for! So I threw out my fear and started drawing. My first drawing was even recognizable to someone else without prompting (a tornado - well, two tornados - although he thought my tree in the whirlwind was a house, but whatever, that's why I'm reading this book, right?)

I like that it gives you both the reasons for doing something as well as the instructions. So you're also learning how to appreciate art/drawing as you're learning how to do it.

I wish the book had actually been spiral bound, rather than glue/perfect binding, so that it would be easier to use it as a sketchbook.

Practical information for those of us with no art background
By jc
This book explains art concepts like open and closed compositions, line and form, perspective, etc. in an interesting way that helps me understand how to use these concepts to improve my drawing. As each concept is explained, there is opportunity for practice right in the book. I do not understand the review that said there is a lot of text. The vast majority of the pages are mostly blank with instructions about how to use the concept being studied. So, don't let the idea that this book is wordy or long winded turn you off. In my opinion, it is quite the opposite.

I believe that I will be better (not necessarily good) at drawing when I complete the book. Furthermore, the practice is fun! So, for those of you who, like me, have purchased "beginning drawing" books in the past and found them to be over your head by chapter 3, this is a good book for you to try! You can't help but learn, and you'll have a good time doing it!

Not , by Genes Alone: How Culture Transformed Human Evolution, by Peter J. Richerson, Robert Boyd

Humans are a striking anomaly in the natural world. While we are similar to other mammals in many ways, our behavior sets us apart. Our unparalleled ability to adapt has allowed us to occupy virtually every habitat on earth using an incredible variety of tools and subsistence techniques. Our societies are larger, more complex, and more cooperative than any other mammal's. In this stunning exploration of human adaptation, Peter J. Richerson and Robert Boyd argue that only a Darwinian theory of cultural evolution can explain these unique characteristics.

Not by Genes Alone offers a radical interpretation of human evolution, arguing that our ecological dominance and our singular social systems stem from a psychology uniquely adapted to create complex culture. Richerson and Boyd illustrate here that culture is neither superorganic nor the handmaiden of the genes. Rather, it is essential to human adaptation, as much a part of human biology as bipedal locomotion. Drawing on work in the fields of anthropology, political science, sociology, and economics--and building their case with such fascinating examples as kayaks, corporations, clever knots, and yams that require twelve men to carry them--Richerson and Boyd convincingly demonstrate that culture and biology are inextricably linked, and they show us how to think about their interaction in a way that yields a richer understanding of human nature.

In abandoning the nature-versus-nurture debate as fundamentally misconceived, Not by Genes Alone is a truly original and groundbreaking theory of the role of culture in evolution and a book to be reckoned with for generations to come.

Review
“There have been a number of more or less complex variants on this . . . metaphor for genetic evolution and it is generally agreed that the most nuanced and sophisticated version is contained in the work of Robert Boyd and Peter Richerson, and laid out in considerable detail in Not By Genes Alone.” (Richard Lewontin The New York Review of Books 2005-10-04)

“Drawing on new ideas about multilevel selection, evolutionary psychology and . . . ‘strong reciprocity’ (the bestowing of rewards and punishments even where there is no direct personal gain for this behavior), Richerson and Boyd build a case for a special role for cultural processes in human evolution. . . . It is a book full of good sense and the kinds of intellectual rigour and clarity that we have come to expect from [the authors].” (Robin Dunbar Nature)

“Ambitious and wide-ranging. . . . The writing is lucid, even eloquent. . . . Richerson and Boyd have done a rare thing: Casting their net widely across a range of disciplines, in order to tackle the most complex phenomenon of our species, and they have achieved consilience. Read and ponder.”

(W. C. McGrew Journal of Human Evolution 2006-02-01)

“Writing in a much more accessible form than they have before, Richerson and Boyd lay out their case for the role of culture in shaping the human mind and behavior. . . . . This book provides an excellent account  of Richerson and Boyd's theory, and is a must-read for anyone interested in gene-culture coevolution.”

(Susan Blackmore Bioscience 2006-01-01)

"[The] subject, the place of culture in human evolutionary dynamics, is relatively neglected, and is rarely as well debated as it is here. . . . Indeed, their text deserves to be considered by all of us in any field of archaeology." (Don Brothwell Antiquity)

"This is an important work that is sure to generate lively discussion on a topic crucial to our understanding of ourselves." (Northeastern Naturalist)

"Richerson and Boyd have produced an excellent explication and overview of the current state of the research on cultural evolution . . . and the relative roles of genes and culture in human evolution and behavior from the Pleistocene to the present--and they have done all this in a rigorous but non-technical, easily readable format. I think that both those who are just beginning to explore the evolutionary sources of human behavior and those who are currently engaged in work in this area will greatly benefit from reading this book." (Adam Gifford, Jr. Journal of Bioeconomics)

Genes and Culture working together.
By Michael Valdivielso
Not By Genes Alone by Peter J. Richerson and Robert Boyd explains something that should seem simple. Genes made us, we made culture, so genes shaped culture. Yet culture also helped shape us, so genes and culture interact together and work together to make us. But HOW do you do research on culture and link it to genes? Well, if culture also acts like genes, then what you want to do it treat it like genes.

And that is what the book does. It studies culture from an evolutionary point of view, breaking it down to traditions and values, making these the genes of culture. Cultures evolves, adapts and sometimes even cause problems, bringing about the extinction of the culture. One culture might work better than another and overwhelm the weaker, less fit culture.

By using the ideas and knowledge that Darwin has passed down to us the authors were able to understand how genes and culture worked together to shape US. LOTS and lots of detailed, data rich, chapters. Take your time and enjoy.

Great intro to evolution of culture(s)
By Manuel A. Ramos
Greatly interested in neuroscience of the brain & said book was mentioned in
Patricia Churchland's "Touching a nerve..." I'm a Darwinist @ heart & have
wanted to have a sense of the history of human culture(s) in terms of the HOW.
Richerson's book is a great intro availing himself of the latest research in that
field.

A laugh-out-loud romantic (mis)adventure from the internationally bestselling author Mhairi McFarlane

Anna Alessi – history expert, possessor of a lot of hair and an occasionally filthy mouth – seeks nice man for intelligent conversation and Harlequin romance moments.

Despite the oddballs that keep turning up on her dates, Anna couldn’t be happier. As a 30-something with a job she loves, life has turned out better than she dared dream. However, things weren’t always this way, and her years spent as the butt of schoolyard jokes are ones she’d rather forget.

So when James Fraser – the architect of Anna’s final humiliation at school – walks back into her life, her world is turned upside down. But James seems a changed man. Polite. Mature. Funny, even. People can change, right? So why does Anna feel like she’s a fool to trust him?

Hilarious and poignant, ‘Here’s Looking At You’ will have you laughing one minute and crying the next.

Brit Chick Lit Find
By SW
It's summer and, while spending time poolside, I find myself reading more "chick lit" than usual. While not amongst the genre's best, HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU, was far from bad, and tickled a certain itch.

As an Anglophile, Brit Chick Lit has always been my favorite subset and while Mhairi McFarlane can't compare to the likes of Helen Fielding, Sophia Kinsella or, my favorite, Marian Keyes, I'd say she holds her own and her characters elicit (positive) comparisons to all three's best-loved books, with a hit of Nick Horby-esque male growing pains thrown in for good measure.

Funny--I laughed out loud several times while reading--slightly profane and often emotionally spot-on, HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU has a catchy premise: a school's put-upon ugly duckling grows up and becomes a swan, only to be unhappily reunited with her school crush/tormentor. James is the one Anna's spent her adult life loathing, but he doesn't remember her at all. Anna learns that, wait a minute, even the popular kids don't come away unscarred, and have plenty of problems of their own, as James shows.

The story, written from both of the main character's perspectives (though Anna's gets a lot more depth), doesn't break new ground, but it's got plenty of fun, singleton hijinks (disastrous dates, relationships gone wrong, colorful best friends on both sides) combined with a few truly insightful and poignant moments that made this read a notch above for me.

Weak points are, yes, the predictability, but more noticeably that some of the writing is a little scattered and, especially in the first half, the chapters occasionally seem a little choppy, as if large chunks were removed and the remaining text wasn't fully re-edited to accommodate. A tighter take could have made this one a five-star read for me. In the end, the quick wit often on display makes me want to seek out more from this author, so four stars it is.

Delightful read
By Jacqueline M Lim
The romance genre has zipped up the charts lately with the lightning popularity of erotica laden ebooks. And while I don’t mind a nice little sexy love scene every now and then, the overabundance of them in many romance novels, ironically tends to obscure the very essence of what makes romance novels so popular – the romance; the story of two people falling in love. “Here’s looking at you” doesn’t fall into this trap at all. This is the best kind of romance or chicklit novel – its all about the characters. Anna and James are charming and their slowly evolving relationship from not-quite adversaries to not-quite friends to friends and eventually more than friends is a delightful, smart and endearing read. The dialogue is sharp and insightful, the writing is an easy mix of wit and tenderness and the characters are warm, down to earth and believable (no blushing virgins or billionaires here). I love that the characters are just ordinary people with ordinary lives – no sport stars or ex-military heroes on these pages. Just two people trying to go about their business, navigating through life’s twisting turns. I loved the author’s first book, “You had me at hello” and I have been waiting for another book from her. The first book was good and this one is even better. I can’t wait for the next one.

That was then; this is now.
By Joy V. Smith
Anna Alessi is happy with her life after high school; she even finally decides that she will go to her high school reunion despite her fears. Well, that wasn't so bad. EEK! Life does get complicated...

In the meantime Anna has been trying out online dating, and despite repeated disappointments--and one persistent suitor--she's afraid this will be the only way to find Mr. Right. She also has to deal with a new challenge at work and offline relationships and her sister's wedding.

The current English slang can be confusing, and everyone seems to be drinking a lot, but I enjoyed the story, though it started out slowly for me--after the poignant beginning. I wondered how the author would solve the various relationship problems; the story alternates between two viewpoints, btw, so we can understand the male viewpoints too. There's a good deal of introspection, and the reader can sympathize with how confusing life can be...

Quality global history text
By Daniel
The textbook is one of the better ones in that it treats the history in a truly global way, being interregional when it can, and proceeding chronologically in each chapter. The maps are extensively used and very helpful. The coverage is strong on areas such as early America and Oceania. The analytical questions are helpful for class discussions. Good text.

The China Study Cookbook: Over 120 Whole Food, Plant-Based Recipes, by LeAnne Campbell

The China Study, with 850,000 copies sold, has been hailed as one of the most important health and nutrition books ever published. It revealed that the traditional Western diet has led to our modern health crisis and the widespread growth of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Based on the most comprehensive nutrition study ever conducted, the book reveals that a plant-based diet leads to optimal health with the power to halt or reverse many diseases.

The China Study Cookbook takes these scientific findings and puts them to action. Written by LeAnne Campbell, daughter of The China Study author T. Colin Campbell, PhD, and mother of two hungry teenagers, The China Study Cookbook features delicious, easily prepared plant-based recipes with no added fat and minimal sugar and salt that promote optimal health.

From her Breakfast Home-Fry Hash and Fabulous Sweet Potato Enchiladas to No-Bake Peanut Butter Bars and Cheese(less) Cake, all of LeAnne’s recipes follow three important principles:

1. Optimal nutrition is based on eating food rather than nutrient supplements
2. The closer that foods are to their native states—prepared with minimal cooking, salting, and processing—the greater the long-term health benefits of eating them
3. It is best to choose locally and organically grown produce whenever possible

Filled with helpful tips on substitutions, keeping foods nutrient-rich, and transitioning to a plant-based diet, The China Study Cookbook shows how to transform individual health and the health of the entire family.

New vegan with a lot of kids!
By Deanna
I'm reviewing this from the standpoint of being vegan for only 4 months. My twin sister got cancer at age 39 and tested positive for lynch syndrome which means she genetically has a higher risk of certain cancers than the general population. My children and I run the same risk and all the cancer diet research leads me to a low-fat vegan diet. I'm also reviewing this from the perspective of a mom who cooks for a husband, a mother-in-law, and 7 kids (ages 18-6 months) everyday. I've spent hours and hours pouring over recipes for my new menu. If I was going to change everything I fed my family, my new Vegan recipes had to trump my old traditional American family favorites. They have!!! However we also teach our kids that every meal does NOT have to be a symphony in their mouth.
I really love that there are no added oils in these recipes. From cooking them I've learned I can successfully omit all the oils from other recipes or make substitutions without losing anything but unwanted fat. I learned from this cookbook that ground flax seeds and water make an excellent egg substitute. I even used it to coat and batter tofu fishsticks from a recipe in The Vegan Lunchbox. I love that these recipes use minimal amounts of sweeteners but they're still delicious. I personally think every recipe in the book is top notch and I would eat them, as I've made a lot of them. However I will only cook foods that win in our family by a majority vote. Here are the recipes that are kid tested and family approved. Pecan Ball Subs (pg 150) is the top pick. Other winners are: Favorite French Toast (add 1/2 cup whole grain flour to the batter to make a fancy battered French toast), Fruit Crepes (or creeps as my kids call them), pumpkin pancakes, Panana Cakes (big hit), scrambled Tofu, Fiesta Cornbread, No-bake Peanut Butter Bars (my 6 yr old cried when they were all gone and begged everyday for more). Now these other recipes are not a big hit with the kids, but I make them because the adults like them so well: Garlic Greenbeans and Mushrooms (fancy and delicious), Thai Wraps (I could eat them everyday) Pumpkin Gnocchi with Italian Vegetable Sauce (my husband said it's the bomb). This recipe book has been the standard by which I judge, choose, or modify other recipes. Other helpful books I recommend: Eat To Live, The Starch Solution, Disease-proof Your Child, Engine 2 Diet, My Beef With Meat, Fart Free Vegan, The China Study, any book by Dr Neal Barnard ( I loved Breaking The Food Seduction and The 21 Day Kickstart Program).
Without trying to lose weight per se, I've lost 15 lbs, my husband 13 lbs, 18 yr old son 10 lbs, 17 yr old daughter 5 lbs, Mother-in-law 12 lbs.

"SIMPLE, DELICIOUS RECIPES, WITHOUT THE FAT!"
By Author/Reviewer Geri Ahearn
Leanne Campbell, daughter of 'The China Study' author, delivers an intriguing cookbook, based on the the findings and conclusions of 'The China Study.' There is a huge selection of plant-based recipes that are offered, without added fat, and minimal sugar and salt. The results of research in 'The China study' concluded that a plant-based diet results in better health as it can aid in reducing obesity, and reversing diseases such as diabetes, and heart disease. The findings also conclude that this diet can halt diseases such as cancer. The recipes provided are easy-to-prepare, tasty, and highlight the importance of avoiding additional fat. The recipes include breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts and more. These quick and easy meals and snacks include helpful tips on substitutions, based on the author's principals and advice for better nutrition, and less weight gain. These favorite recipes from the plant-based movement are specifically prepared as no-oil dishes as another aid in improving health. My daughter's first choice as a peanut butter lover is the no-bake Peanut Butter Bars, and mine is the Home-Fry Hash as breakfast is my favorite meal. Since we both love sweet potatoes, the Sweet Potato Enchiladas is next on the agenda as we keep track of our weight, along with exercise. Each week, we will experiment with a new recipe, and I will give our opinion of the outcome. There is something for everyone in this huge selection of recipes. In addition, I have many friends who are diabetics, interested in sharing these recipes. An update of recipes we made this week: GREEK SALAD WITH NUTS (I used walnuts instead of pine-nuts, very tasty. The PUMPKIN PANCAKES were delicious, and the BLUEBERRY COFFEE CAKE was a big hit. Next on the agenda will be BANANA CRUMB MUFFINS and FAVORITE FRENCH TOAST. We are truly enjoying the Breakfast selection, but there is also much more to satisfy hungry cravings. A recent Update: I made the FETTUCCINI WITH BROCCOLI AND CASHEW SAUCE. A very tasty dish, and cooking time is only 20 minutes. I will be making this again! Also, we made the mouth-watering COCONUT OATMEAL COOKIES, delicious & baking time is only 15 minutes as well as preparation time. This recipe makes 16 cookies, so we stored for several dessert occasions. A better road to good health, and a great gift for family, and friends. Highly recommended!

**Special Note- I have an ARC of this book & also purchased this book for my daughter.

~~A Review is only the opinion of a Reviewer, but I hope you enjoy as much as we did!

Intellectuals, by Paul Johnson

Do the private practices of intellectuals match the standard of their public principles? How great is their respect for truth? What is their attitude to money? How do they treat their spouses and children - legitimate and illegitimate? How loyal are they to their friends? Rousseau, Shelley, Marx, Ibsen, Tolstoy, Hemingway, Bertrand Russell, Brecht, Sartre, Edmund Wilson, Victor Gollancz, Lillian Hellman, Cyril Connolly, Norman Mailer, Kenneth Tynan and many others are put under the spotlight. With wit and brilliance, Paul Johnson exposes these intellectuals, and questions whether ideas should ever be valued more than individuals.

Amazon.com Review
Conservative historian Paul Johnson wears his ideology proudly on his sleeve in this often ruthless dissection of the thinkers and artists who (in his view) have shaped modern Western culture, having replaced some 200 years ago "the old clerisy as the guides and mentors of mankind." Taking on the likes of Karl Marx, Bertrand Russell, Lillian Hellman, and Noam Chomsky in turn, Johnson examines one idol after another and finds them all to have feet of clay. In his account, for instance, Ernest Hemingway emerges as an artistic hero who labored endlessly to forge a literary style unmistakably his own, but also as a deeply flawed man whose concern for the perfect phrase did not carry over to a concern for the women who loved him. Gossipy and sharply opinionated, Johnson's essay in cultural history spares no one.

Does it really matter that Henrik Ibsen was vain and arrogant, that Jean-Paul Sartre was incontinent? In Johnson's view, it does: these all-too-human foibles disqualify them, and other thinkers, from presuming to criticize the shortcomings of society. "Beware intellectuals," he concludes (though, given the subjects of his book, it seems he means intellectuals only of the left). "Not only should they be kept well away from the levers of power, they should also be objects of particular suspicion when they seek to offer collective advice." Whether one agrees or not, Johnson's profiles are frequently amusing and illuminating, as when he suggests that the only proletarian Karl Marx ever knew in person was the poor maid who worked for him for decades and was never paid, except in room and board, for her labors. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly
Written from a conservative standpoint, these pummeling profiles of illustrious intellectuals are caustic, skewed, thought-provoking and thoroughly engaging. The author of A History of the World skeptically weighs each pundit's moral and judgmental credentials to give advice to humanity. He plays up the personal shortcomings of Marx, a failed academic given to pseudoscientific jargon, habitual anger and dictatorial habits; Sartre, a spoiled only child, existentialist philosopher of action who did nothing of consequence for the French Resistance and never lifted a finger to save the Jews; pacifist Bertrand Russell, who repeatedly advocated "preventative" nuclear war against Stalinist Russia between 1945 and 1949; Hemingway, whose adolescent rejection of his parents' religion is said to have triggered his secular ethic of action and violence. This rogues' gallery includes "notorious liar" Lillian Hellman; self-publicists Norman Mailer and Bertolt Brecht; leftist publisher Victor Gollancz, "a monster of self-deception"; Shelley, Rousseau, Tolstoy, Ibsen, others.

From Library Journal
The central theme of Johnson's new book is "Beware intellectuals!" Johnson examines the rise of the intellectual as a sort of secular seer and moral arbiter, a role once filled by the priest or soothsayer. These intellectuals, starting with Rousseau, promote themselves as possessing the moral authority to transform society, a claim that Johnson disputes. He approaches his subject through a selective series of ad hominem case studies, including Shelley, Ibsen, Tolstoy, Marx, Hemingway, Brecht, Sartre, Hellman, and others. The focus is more on what Johnson takes to be the moral contradictions of these individuals than on their ideas. As such, it is more interesting as literary gossip than intellectual history.

Fascinating Read, But Flawed Argument (Maybe)
By David Spor
Paul Johnson's Intellectuals is a must read for anyone who loves history, philosophy, biography, or just plain juicy gossip. It's style is wonderful - fast paced with clear prose that makes you feel like you are being told a good, gripping story. There are enough details, backed by extensive notes, to keep you well informed, but not so much that the non-history buff will find his eyes glazing over. There is also some solid factual ammunition for conservatives in Johnson's account of Marx's utter lack of scholarship.
Perhaps the one serious drawback about the book is that Johnson does not really draw out the argument which it was written to make. Johnson wants to call into question the authority of intellectuals who lead immoral lives to give the average man advice about life, but other than raising the question, he does little to draw the argument to a logical conclusion. Reciting the numerous vices of the intellectuals in question is not an argument. It must be connected with some other proposition, such as that those who are immoral are intellectualy unreliable, or that bad ideas come from bad people, in order to make a case. In the end, Johnson fails to do that, and the book ends up more like a circumstantial ad hominem (at its best) or an extended gossip column (at its worst).
I would recommend the book as a delightful, informative read, but if you are looking for logical argumentation, you will have to supply your own. Intellectuals supplies the conservative with a great deal of material from which to create a premise, but the logical form and the conclusion will have to come from some other source.

An attack on delusional arrogance
By Guillermo Maynez
This is a funny and truly provocative book. By "intellectual", Johnson means scientists or artists who go well beyond their abilities and try to design new codes of behavior, new systems of government and new moral rules for the humankind. That is, people who, just because they are good at doing something, think they get the moral right (and duty) to tell the rest of the world how to conduct their affairs.
Through several biographic essays, Johnson shows just how dangerous some intellectuals can become, and at the same time he shows us the low level of their ethical record. Undoubtedly, he exaggerates at some points, and in some other his gossipy is too much, but beyond that, his thesis is valid and solidly grounded. I agree with the central idea: that being a good poet, playwright or mathematician doesn't mean that one is qualified to give opinions about every possible subject, the more politicized, the better. Johnson correctly rejects utopianisms and Messiah-like behaviors. Of course, the bad moral credentials of these people does not diminish the quality of their work in the least, but the book rightly states that arrogant intellectuals are also capable of saying and doing stupid things. Don't buy it? Check out newspapers and magazines and see European and American "intellectual celebrities" talk about complex conflicts in other parts of the world, of which they know nothing but nonetheless give radical -and frequently imbecile- opinions.

Beware Intellectuals!
By Nottingham
Paul Johnson takes on a line-up of first class intellectuals spanning three centuries, and declares: Beware Intellectuals.
By shining a bright light on the dark side of these very public figures - on their greed, their lust and promiscuity, their deceit and arrogance, and especially the despicable way they treated those around them, including and especially their spouse and children while proclaiming selfless love for humanity, Johnson made a strong case on how only human these luminaries truly were. And posed the question as to how fit intellectuals really were in preaching to others how they should manage their affairs.
You will find an idol or two of yours deflated as you read Johnson's well-researched book. Some would argue that the merits of a man's ideas are independent of the man himself. This is certainly true with scientific ideas (or theories), which can be empirically validated. Albert Einstein, Edward Teller, or even James Watson were not necessarily what one wants for close friends, but one would not reject the theories of relativity, thermonuclear reaction and the double-helical structure of DNA for the personal failings of these scientists. On the other hand, one must wonder aloud the value of the social theories proclaimed by the intellectuals who somehow saw their theories fit for the masses but not for themselves!
Perhaps this book is one-sided. It mostly picked on the leftists. I am afraid the raw statistics are also quite one-sided. It is the vision of the left to see themselves as an anointed group who are destined to "run things" to make a better world. Regardless, I am inclined to think that the intellectuals on the right are just as hypocritical, if fewer in number.
One key point well argued in this book is that the talent of people in one area, which renders them famous, does not give them license to mentor mankind in all affairs. One sees this folly everyday with many Hollywood and other media celebrities.
"Intellectuals" is a joy to read. While Johnson harshly critiqued the dark side of these intellectuals, he also presented them in the proper historical context and gave due to the epochal importance of their work where it was appropriate. Johnson's writing style was graceful and engaging. Like a good historian, he was meticulous with facts and data, which, though selected to support his thesis, were factual nonetheless. This book, besides being informative, has given me quite a refreshed perspective on intellectuals. It is one of those books that you read and think about again and again because it is rightly provocative.
