HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Pick Up Your Bed and Walk: Surviving Church Splits and Spiritual Abuse by Virgil Thomas is a short book that packs a powerful punch...and I say that in a most positive context. Thomas does not spend time and energy wallowing in the why's and wherefore's with regard to reasons these things occur, except to acknowledge the authorship of satan--the one who according to scripture steals, kills and destroys. Rather he speaks from a place of personal experience, spiritual maturity, and godly wisdom--asserting that these experiences are necessary for a church to go through in order to separate the chaff from the wheat, so to speak (my phrasing, not his).

As a Christian exposed to spiritual abuse during my youth, I know all too well the emotional and spiritual scars that remain as a result. Having returned to Christianity after a 30 year absence, I struggle with many of the same issues Thomas refers to...lack of trust of church leadership; uncertainty about a new, healthy church home; hypervigilance over issues that even vaguely remind me of the prior experience--which may or may not be important or relevant, etc.

However, this book has served to put this challenging experience in perspective and has given me renewed hope. Among the many golden gems of wisdom I found in the book, the part which spoke directly to me was the acknowledgement that this kind of experience changes us...a wounding that outwardly heals but leaves painful scars. However, Thomas admonishes that this is not a reason to lose hope. When we put our trust and faith in Jesus and not a specific church or minister, we can and will survive the church split or abuse and come out of it stronger and more spiritually mature on the other side. Virgil Thomas has done the Body of Christ a service by sharing his experience, strength and hope, and I highly recommend this book!

This book is a page-turner.

Even though this is not the kind of literature I usually enjoy reading, the narrative presents strange events that sparks the readers' curiosity to know what is going to happen next. The main character, Carmela has her share of qualities and flaws making her very believable and likable.
Unlike most fantasy stories it takes place in the 'real world' and therefore the events can actually happen without anyone being aware of them. Would be an interesting read for young people who don't think that witches are necessarily evil.

Power and Ideology in Education was first published in the same year as Bowles and Gintis' Schooling in Capitalist America and Willis' Learning to Labor. As such, it was part of a learned and exciting effort to place schooling in an inter-institutional context. Rather than focus on schooling as an autonomous institution charged with serving as an engine of thoroughgoing social reform, Karabel and Halsey's reader made clear that education was inextricably tied to other institutions, and that its potential for fostering social change had long been grossly exaggerated. Education was secondary to and served other, more powerful institutions, especially the economy.

The relentless school-bashing that began in the mid-1970's had little or nothing to do with the quality of public education. Instead, changes in labor markets fostered by out-sourcing, down-sizing, internationalization, and ongoing technological developments sharply reduced the number of jobs that paid a family's living wage and offered a decent benefit package. With the exception of a few authors on the left, students of schooling determinedly failed to see this and blamed education for undercutting the gains working people had made since the end of World War II. This misguided human capital theoretic mindset has persisted until today, even espoused by Barack Obama.

Karabel and Halsey's reader remains useful, but it is now badly dated. Halsey et al.'s 1997 reader is so topically diffuse and lacking in theoretical focus that it is not an ideal follow-up, but it's the best one available.

Great for beginners. I like the "bookmark", but I wish the online access was more helpful in learning to memorize the terms. There were OK activities, but they didn't help to actually learn every term in the chapters.

I know its a learning system and all, but sometimes you just want to look up a word. What good is a medical terminology book if you need to buy a dictionary to go with it?

Save yourself money, do not buy the Kindle version!!

I ordered this Kindle book because it was so much less expensive. I didn't realize it is actually a workbook. Upon using this for my first assignment, I realize it just does not work as an electronic book. The content and structure of the book seems interesting, but you obviously can not write in it to complete assignments and it is really tough to maneuver around the book as the content instructs for further info to complete the assignments. There is a notecard option and notebook option which seems helpful in theory, but it does not work as you would expect and there is not much explanation on how to actually utilize these functions easily. I actually have to go and by the hard copy at this point. Very disappointing.
