Pick Up Your Bed and Walk: Surviving Church Splits and Spiritual Abuse by Virgil Thomas is a short book that packs a powerful punch...and I say that in a most positive context. Thomas does not spend time and energy wallowing in the why's and wherefore's with regard to reasons these things occur, except to acknowledge the authorship of satan--the one who according to scripture steals, kills and destroys. Rather he speaks from a place of personal experience, spiritual maturity, and godly wisdom--asserting that these experiences are necessary for a church to go through in order to separate the chaff from the wheat, so to speak (my phrasing, not his).
As a Christian exposed to spiritual abuse during my youth, I know all too well the emotional and spiritual scars that remain as a result. Having returned to Christianity after a 30 year absence, I struggle with many of the same issues Thomas refers to...lack of trust of church leadership; uncertainty about a new, healthy church home; hypervigilance over issues that even vaguely remind me of the prior experience--which may or may not be important or relevant, etc.
However, this book has served to put this challenging experience in perspective and has given me renewed hope. Among the many golden gems of wisdom I found in the book, the part which spoke directly to me was the acknowledgement that this kind of experience changes us...a wounding that outwardly heals but leaves painful scars. However, Thomas admonishes that this is not a reason to lose hope. When we put our trust and faith in Jesus and not a specific church or minister, we can and will survive the church split or abuse and come out of it stronger and more spiritually mature on the other side. Virgil Thomas has done the Body of Christ a service by sharing his experience, strength and hope, and I highly recommend this book!
