Steve Cotter draws from a diverse background as a champion athlete and cutting-edge trainer in developing some of the most exciting programs in strength and conditioning today. Enhanced Edition is a must have...

Own both editions of this book... the enhanced edition of this book which has Mr. Cotter demonstrating each technique through short video demonstrations is much better. His technique is flawless... and as it goes... a picture is worth ten thousand words.

Great book on kettlebell training

If you are looking for a book on Kettlebell training, this is a good one to pick up. I've been using a kettlebell off and on for two years now, mainly just using the swing. Cotter offers basic, intermediate, and advanced exercises that will give you more bang for your kettlebell buck. You can really do a complete workout and be ready to go.

Least favorite thing: Don't have two kettlebells . . . to do everything that he offers in the book you need multiple kettlebells.

Most favorite thing: Love the routined workouts at the end that target specific types of sports and athletes. Not comprehensive, but a great start.

Effective Primer for Beginners, Advanced, and Athletes

Steve Cotter's Kettlebell Training is a comprehensive kettlebell guide full of clear, professional-quality photographs. In the introduction he explains the advantages of kettlebells over dumbbells and barbells (leverage, grip, high-rep position, etc.). He explains why a weight belt is good for kettlebell training (imagine doing 10 minutes straight of kettlebell clean and jerks, for example).

He explains many safety techniques including warm-ups and the importance of chalk so that your grip doesn't slip.

For me, the most important part is the correct squat technique in which you practice without a kettlebell while keeping your back vertical. You do this facing a wall so that you don't lean into the wall. Then you can do the correct squats and kettlebell swings without a wall in front of you while still keeping your back vertical AT ALL TIMES. Before I did my squats, deadlifts, and swings correctly, I tweaked my back 3 times, each time not being able to walk for a week. Since using the correct technique, which I first learned watching a Bob Harper kettlebell DVD, I have not hurt my back.

After the safety and warm-up section, there are exercises for beginners, intermediate, advanced, custom programs, and sport-specific workouts.

The only limitation of this finely produced book in my experience is that it is better, in the absence of a professional instructor guiding you through the moves, to use videos and it's more clear to see "bodies in action" than to read instructions with still photos.

Nevertheless, Kettlebell Training is a comprehensive guide for the beginner and advanced trainer alike.

Advanced, but very worthwhile anthology

This is an anthology of 41 essays concerning a wide number of topics concerning Celtic Studies, from the bronze age to Modern times. Religion, economy, boat-building, town structure, metalworking, art, and so forth are discussed in some depth. Celtic Christianity is further discussed as are the survival prospects for the current Celtic languages.

This is a mammoth tome-- the essays total over 800 pages of information, and while there is some variation in quality among the essays, this is to be expected.

More than this would not be possible in a book covering so much material. However, I will go into a little more detail on one specific topic that I found in this book: the implication of the arrival of the iron age. The typical historical narrative goes something like this: One day, our stone age ancestors discovered how to smelt copper. Eventually they learned how to mix it with other things to make harder alloys like arsenical and tin bronze. As they developed their technologies they learned how to smelt iron, and because iron is so much superior to bronze it quickly took over. There are some things that have bothered me for a long time about that theory, including the fact that we have small numbers of iron artifacts made by otherwise bronze-age cultures in the Pontic-Caspian Steppes (see The Horse, the Wheel, and Language: How Bronze-Age Riders from the Eurasian Steppes Shaped the Modern World for more on that topic).

This essay introduces a few ideas which I think are crucial to solving that problem. Instead of discussing progressions of smelting techologies, the author addresses the economic impact and required technological changes in switching from bronze to iron. The detailed discussions of bronze vs ironworking techniques plus the discussions of general availability of iron vs copper and tin allow me to understand this shift as primarily economic rather than technological in nature (technological changes were required but they were more lateral changes than upgrades per se).

Every other essay in this book is similarly fascinating and thought provoking. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who already has a grounding in this area and is looking for more advanced reading material.

An excellent reference and in depth look at celtic research

This book is chock full of information. The articles are organized according to subject matter. I like the book because it gives a wide discussion of many differing aspects of celtic historical research. I have used it extensively to flesh out characters and background in writing and discussion with others with same interests as myself in celtic history. I would reccommend it wholeheartedly to any scholar in this area of research.

During the two major wars on American soil New Jersey and New York ironworks turned out badly needed supplies―among them the huge chains and booms used to block the British advance up the Hudson during the Revolution―and ordnance, made and shipped in record-breaking time, for Union troops.

This is also the story of the hardy men who made this industry possible―where they came from, what their homes and company towns were like, how they lived, and how they left their mark on American history.

James M. Ransom spent twenty-five years inspecting remains of mines (seventy-five are described and located), furnaces and forges, dams and millraces, and other ruins closely associated with iron production in the Ramapo region. But not all was on-site research. He also searched through old account books, newspapers, and records, evaluating their historical importance. When word spread of his intense interest in the field, he was offered material unknown to historians―in particular, a collection of old ledgers, some dating back two hundred years, and a group of rare photographs from 1865 to 1905. From such extensive investigation, Ransom uncovered previously unknown facts, filled in gaps, and corrected mistakes made by earlier writers on the subject.

Classic Book of the Iron Mines in NJ and NY

I had heard about this book that was published originally in 1966 and just reprinted in 2011. I couldn't find a copy of the original and was delighted to see it in reprint.

Having grown up in the Ringwood mine area in the 1950's, I appreciate this book as a great historical reference of this particular area and the larger iron mining community.

I just got the book yesterday but I was immediately taken of the account of the large iron chain still displayed outside at Ringwood Manor House. When I was growing up it was still referenced as part of the chain stretched across the Hudson River during the Revolutionary War. Read this well documented account of this piece of chain's acquisition in 1887 and decide for yourself.

Bottom line............... buy this book.

You see, We lived in Ringwood, NJ, where much of this book is written about, for over 20 years. We raised two girls there, who call the area "home". I re-bought the book, because I wanted to have one of my own. There is a lot of political activity, now, about our historical past, as there always has been. However, here is a book, written about an area that we lived in and knew. We knew many of the people and families written about in the book. We walked and drove around the mines. I picked up some pieces of iron ore, right off the ground. Ringwood was a great place to live, and a great place to have known its historical roots. Now, when I get "homesick", I can pick up the book and "go back in time", so to speak. Great book. Loads of history about the Revolutionary War period...that the iron ore used to make the famous "chain across the Hudson" actually came from these mines, among other historical constructions. I wish the mines had somehow, been maintained....at least, their entrances, but "that's progress", as they call it.

Very interesting read on a neglected subject---iron mining and refining in northern New Jersey. Fans of Clinton Road mysteries should enjoy the straight history given here.

I have followed Hilarion for years. I have looked forward for months to this book's release. Now that I have it, I am not disappointed. Hilarion is thoughtful, insightful, and always a delight. This book is full of his wisdom from beginning to end and a treat I would never want to miss. everyone on the awakening path owes this one to themselves.

In this time of intense energies and chaotic reactions to daily life, this book provides you with a soft comforting blanket feel of we can do this and yet provides wise consul.. Marlene is the scribe for Master Hilarion, yet it is her energy you feel that takes you by the hand in this journey of supportive enlightenment. When I find myself emotionally drained and spiritually weary, many nights I cannot sleep, I personally open this book at 3am seeking answers. Immediately I a guided to look at the right chapter for the issue bothering me. The. wisdom is so heartfelt. and the physical sense of being comforted, makes this a book to have readily available by you . It is beautifully written and the green ray of healing on the cover infuses the whole book. I highly recommend it.

It is my go to manual and I make sure I read it every day...even just a couple of pages...to stay in Hilarion's energy and to be overshadowed by his love. Valuable information and tips for us who are Healers, Wayshowers and Lightworkers. During the first read, I took notes and have a page of affirmations I say daily to assist with every thing from energy downloads, to remaining in the highest vibrational state possible. I cannot say enough about this book. I'm eternally grateful to Marlene for her ability to bring it to us at this most important time. Bravo!
