Her imaginative, unconventional memoir mirrors the hallucinatory nature of this world as she mingles reminiscences, fiction, hospital sketches, and family profiles to chart the course of her physical and mental life from diagnosis through a successful liver transplant and recovery.

Anyone who has ever been in a hospital will recognize the frail, vulnerable, disoriented state of mind she evokes in describing her time there. Yet Clendinnen also displays biting humor (especially in portraits of fellow patients) and an almost mystical sense of purpose as she seizes on writing as the tool to make sense of her situation. Childhood memories loom large, many invoking the beauty of the natural world, ever-present and overwhelming in rural Australia. Presiding over that childhood, her proud, stoical, impenetrable mother "provided me with an inspiriting mystery: the obdurate opacity of other beings"--and sparked, Clendinnen believes, her lifelong pursuit of historical mysteries.

But the experience of being seriously ill dominates this text. The title comes from her determination to emulate a zoo tiger she admires because he refuses to acknowledge his imprisonment: "I too was in a cage, with feeding times and washing times and bars at the side of my cot, and people coming to stare and prod ... whenever I felt the threat of the violation of self, I would invoke the vision of the tiger." Although Australian author Clendinnen is a specialist in ancient Mexican cultures, readers may remember her best for Reading the Holocaust. Here, she turns her historian's eye inward, to make sense of the year when, in her 50s, she was felled by acute liver disease and found that only by writing could she free herself at least psychologically and intellectually from the confines of her hospital bed. Yet Clendinnen does not burden us with a sentimental account of her near-death experience; instead, she carefully explores the root of history, fiction and the self: "Janus-faced" memory. In the course of writing, Clendinnen discovers that her memory is eel-like, selective, inaccurate and biased, despite her best efforts to pin it down. This realization leads her to new insights about historical inquiry and about the porous border delineating fact and fiction. At one point during her recovery, she was unexpectedly interrupted by hallucinations subconscious dreams that weave bits of her own history with fiction so she decided to try her hand at fiction, producing a series of brief, tantalizing characters and situations that deepen this devastatingly beautiful, intricate and wide-ranging work. Ultimately, though her exploration of "I" leads to better self-understanding, Clendinnen chooses not to dwell on herself, but to return to history, "where I began." Aimed at women of a certain age who are taking stock of themselves and the world around them, Clendinnen's book offers a rare and original meditation on the construction of the self.

A noted Australian historian and teacher, Clendinnen (Aztecs: An Interpretation; Reading the Holocaust) not only recounts the details of her life-threatening struggle with severe liver disease, but also intersperses them with personal memoir, short fiction, and Australian history in equal doses. This mixture, along with the sharp, insightful humor and lyrical descriptions Clendinnen describes the experience of recuperation as "the slow, lurching waltz of recovery, step forward, step sideways, step together, step" makes this volume much more memorable than the usual account of a brush with death and subsequent return to not-quite normalcy. Still speaks to me

I haven't read this book in several years, but it still calls to me. It was beautifully written, poetic even. It's rare to look back over a distance of years (and this was a memoir about a woman I was not familiar with) and often think of how much this book touched me. I always think of it when I read another memoir which is what prompted me to write this review. Please pick up this book and read it, you will not regret it.

Hour of Lead, Remembered

Tiger's Eye is Inga Clendinnen's account of her diagnosis of a rare liver disease, her rapidly debilitating illness, finally a liver transplant and ultimate if precarious recovery. But that is like saying Moby Dick is about whaling. This historian from Australia has written a superb treatise full of hard truths on both illness and memory. After all, the truth is not always carried on angels' wings. Along the way she also has written fiction-- short stories-- and some of the history of Australia. After her diagnosis of Active Auto-Immune Hepatitis, she began writing this memoir on her laptop computer, not knowing if she would live or not. She writes searing accounts of her hospitalization: the good, the bad, the indifferent hospital personnel. The visitors who came late and leave early, to get back to their lives outside an institution.
Ms. Clendinnen writes: "What distinguishes the healthy from the ill--which is a more significant division in any society than class or gender or possibly even homelessness--is that the healthy consider feeling well to be the normal state of things." Then there is memory and all the attendant problems. For example, two children of the same parents have different recollections of their parents, but they are both right. "Being ill had taught me how much of ourselves there is in all the stories we tell about the past." Ms. Clendinnen wanted to preserve the memories of her parents, to try to discover what they were like before she was born. The portraits, "as accurate as memory allows," the author would say, of her parents are the best thing I think in this book. Her descriptions of her mother Catherine, born in Melbourne in 1897-- and her futile attempts ever really to know her mother made my eyes water. Her mother's hard life was in some part her own making. Not all her sisters, for example, were as miserable as she. About her mother's death, Ms. Clendinnen writes "how could her life be ending when it had not yet begun? Bound from childhood in a net of unsought obligations, she fought hard, but with weapons which always turned and lacerated her own flesh. In the desolation of old age, with death imminent, I think she finally knew herself to have been trapped, and defeated, from the beginning."
Ms. Clendinnen named this memoir Tiger's Eye after her favorite animal, the tiger, "because he was the only animal who did not acknowledge he was in a cage. . . I too was in a cage, with feeding times and washing times and bars at the side of my cot, and people coming to stare and prod, but the kaleidoscope of the horror of helplessness ceased to turn because I withdrew my consent from it." Like Melville's Ishmael, the now wiser writer lived to tell her tale: "Illness granted me a set of experiences otherwise unobtainable. It liberated me from the routines which would have delivered me, unchallenged and unchanged, to discreet death. Illness casts you out, but it also cuts you free. I will never take conventional expectations seriously again, and the clear prospect of death only makes living more engaging." There is so much to learn from Ms. Clendinnen's ordeal-- about illness, about courage, about getting on with our lives. A very fine book indeed.

Fireworks

I'm re-reading this book as slowly as possible. For the greater pleasure of the fireworks in slow motion. Colacello observes and writes with the most exquisite humor and meticulously documented detail on an explosive subject. A master pyrotechnical artist. A magnificent document. A wonderful treat to read.

One of the best biographies I've ever read

This Warhol biography from the editor of Interview magazine is not only the best biography on Warhol that I've read but one of the best biographies I've ever read. The prose is eloquent, witty, restrained, classical, and fun all at the same time. The portrait of Warhol and his inner circle that emerges is complex, multi-faceted, poignant, humorous, honest and insightful. It is almost Shakespearean in its breadth and scope.

It was one of the most pleasurable, memorable, and illuminating reading experiences I've had in a long time.

Highly recommended!!!

This 237 page tribute to past lives was a joy to review. I fell completely in love with the writier's style as she carefully took me from one interesting event to another. The read focused o a hypnotist and clients he was able to take back into past lives. I learned so much about the different lives of these people through an easy to follow format, that held my interest the whole way through. I found the life of June to be the most intriguing because I felt like I was right there with her, and it amazed me how she could be taken back to a certain year and the information would consistentently be the same. I found the pictures added a nice touch and I also thought it was great how the author presented the information that she was able to document. It helped me to see how reputable and clean they were in their process, and hw they kept it as authentic as possible. I would recommend this exciting and eye opening guide to anyone who has a desire to learn more about past lives. Thanks Dolores, for sharing your fascinating self with the rest of us. About the Author
Dolores Cannon, a regressive hypnotherapist and psychic researcher who records 'Lost' knowledge, was born in 1931 in St. Louis, Missouri. She was educated and lived in St. Louis until her marriage in 1951 to a career Navy man. She spent the next 20 years traveling all over the world as a typical Navy wife, and raising her family. In 1970 her husband was discharged as a disabled veteran, and they retired to the hills of Arkansas. She then started her writing career and began selling her articles to various magazines and newspapers. She has been involved with hypnosis since 1968, and exclusively with past-life therapy and regression work since 1979. She has studied the various hypnosis methods and thus developed her own unique technique which enabled her to gain the most efficient release of information from her clients. Dolores is now teaching her unique technique of hypnosis all over the world. In 1986 she expanded her investigations into the UFO field. She has done on-site studies of suspected UFO landings, and has investigated the Crop Circles in England. The majority of her work in this field has been the accumulation of evidence from suspected abductees through hypnosis. Dolores is an international speaker who has lectured on all the continents of the world. Her thirteen books are translated into twenty languages. She has spoken to radio and television audiences worldwide. And articles about/by Dolores have appeared in several U.S. and international magazines and newspapers. Dolores was the first American and the first foreigner to receive the 'Orpheus Award' in Bulgaria, for the highest advancement in the research of psychic phenomenon. She has received Outstanding Contribution and Lifetime Achievement awards from several hypnosis organizations. Dolores has a very large family who keep her solidly balanced between the 'real' world of her family and the 'unseen' world of her work.

More proof of life-after-death

Having read all of Delores Cannon's books, I highly recommend Five Lives Remembered. Through hypnosis, Cannon is able to take her clients back to their past lives which happened accidentally one day. This is her first book written in 1980 and it tells of the miraculous journey Cannon is taken on by her clients.

Cannon was just a normal wife and mother then she learns hypnosis and starts to use it. To her surprise she stumbles across the past lives of her clients. From that point on Cannon continues her work and for the past 40 years has brought us the most amazing information, everything from past lives to walk-ins to imprinting, a method by which a soul can download lives in order to function here on Earth for the first time. As explained in her many books, the call went out from this planet for higher beings from other worlds to help bring light to our dark world in the end times. If a soul is completely new to Earth, it couldn't function properly without some way of knowing how to deal with the way things are here on earth. This is especially true for beings coming from higher worlds.

It's all so amazing that you'll have to read Cannon's work from the beginning, with Five Lives Remembered to get the whole picture. Well worth the journey.

By far, this is the best book I have ever read. I am not a good reader but once I started I just could not lay the book down till I was completely done. My goal now is to read Delores other books to get a full understanding of life, keep up the good work and keep promoting your knowledge.

In his acknowledgments, Taraborrelli asks if there is anything he can say about Diana Ross in this book that he hasn't already said in his first two biographies of the diva. That daring admission may be the most revelatory thing about this rehash of the author's Call Her Miss Ross (1989). Aside from a little new information on Ross' life since 1989, Taraborrelli delivers the same mix of gossip and quotes from sources with obvious personal agendas that made up the earlier book (the same sort of thing, in fact, that characterizes most "unauthorized" biographies). Still, for those not overly familar with Ross' history, the story of a determined young woman who became a Motown superstar is undeniably engaging. The real reason for the publication of this book at this time is no doubt the success of the movie Dreamgirls, and in fact, that film just may generate new readers interested in comparing the fictional version of Ross' life to the real thing. Fact, Fiction With Perfect Diction

I believe Randy T is a Diana Ross fan. I see him at her shows. I've met him, and he seems a very pleasant fellow. He is also an author. An author who must support himself. So, when Dreamgirls came out in theaters, this was not far behind. A rehashing and reformation of his previous attempt at mortgage payments, Call Her Miss Ross, this &^%^%$&#$^%&^% only slightly redeems Mr. T. There are still passages of dialog that could not have been witnessed, absurd stabs at literary license hoping to create drama and/or intrigue (my fave being the scene at the Motown audition where Flo is described by "a witness" as "The total entertainer's package." I loved Flo to death but she was akward on the mic when speaking, unable to handle anything close to a pop song (3 years of leading on 70% of People and she still couldn't nail it) hated to rehearse, couldn't dance and had poor grammar. Producers rarely, before or after the audition, gave her lead sheets - but readers are left scratching their heads wondering why Flo never became a superstar - after all, she had everything at the age of 15! There are facts and research results here, but WAAAAAAAAY to much supposition for a bio of my fave singer. For a better overview of her life and career, I suggest A Lifetime To Get Here by Thomas Adrahtas. For a fun, dirt filled, silly, over-the-top exaggeration and exploitaton of the Supremes, try All That Glittered (but you still wont know much about the group. No truths about the group, anyway.)

Flawed but still DIVA! My DIVA!

Much more complete than "call her Miss Ross". It shows a human being with high and low points. Good and Bad. Weak and strong. But a super talent and a survivor nonetheless. An enigma she is, but a great talent. Which of us can cast a stone, we are as human as she is. Thanks for showing me the other side of a lady I have admired from my teenage years. I have seen another side, but it has not colored my appreciation of her contribution to the music world.
Some of her behaviour in the early years, especially when Florence cared for her when she had the breakdown in Boston, but yet when it was Florence's turn, she was so matter of fact and uncaring.
Also I can identify with her dilemma with her unemotional father. I had the same. I knew he loved us all, but he was still distant. She has blessed the world with some beautiful music and lyrics that are not X-rated! We an all identify with the experiences that called forth the songs - whether it was a death of a loved one, the lost of a lover, we have all been there, in one way or another.
Her film says a lot about her courage and depth of feeling. How can one so beautifully portray a Schizophrenic when you have never been there personally, or a drug addict like Lady? I fell in love with her in Double Platinum! I've watched it three times so far, and I will again.
We may fault her DUI episode, but have we walked in her shoes? We may criticize her insistence on being respected, she was a businesswoman, an employer, not simply an entertainer.
She has blessed the planet with 5 beautiful children, they don't seem to have been scarred by her 'humanness'. Thanks Diana for your years of beauty and poise, and grace. Thank you for showing us how to pick ourselves up, brush ourselves off, and continue walking. You have aged gracefully. May the force behind the power be with you. You are still the BOSS!!!

SOME NEW INFO... SOME OLD INFO ON THE MOTOWN DIVA

Large sections of this book were lifted from other publications. Entire stories and entire passages were lifted from even some of Taraborrelli's previous books on Diana Ross. There is some new information included in this book but not enough to compensate for the almost word for word duplication of entire passages from other books. On the positive side, the new information that Taraborrelli does include is fascinating. Taraborrelli did include a lot of new information on Diana's later career -post 1986 that is...information that is not included in his previous book on Diana Ross. What I would have liked for Taraborrelli to include was more detail as to why DJ's have virtually snubbed Miss Ross as far as promoting her post 1986 recordings...some of which were quite good. Taraborrelli is a good writer. If he was going to include some of the same information that was included in other publications he should have incorporated a lot more new information to give it a new twist.

We absolutely love this calendar! So many cute pictures. You can't help but smile when you look at the adorable little puppies. We love our Golden and this reminds us of when he was a little pup, getting into things and making us laugh. I would highly recommend this calendar. Great photos, very well planned and bright sharp pictures. I had a mixture of Goldens calendar last year from the same company, it had adult and puppy photos. They are such nice pictures that I saved a couple of my favorites and hung them in the garage. I think I'll make one wall my Golden wall with more pix from this calendar!
