Wright (1867-1959) went into seclusion in a Minnesota cabin to reflect and to record his life experiences. In 1932, the first edition of the Autobiography was published. It became a form of advertising, leading many readers to seek out the master architect--thirty apprentices came to live and learn at Taliesin, Wright's Wisconsin home/school/studio, under the master's tutelage. (By 1938, Taliesin West, in Arizona, was the winter location for Wright's school.)
The volume is divided into five sections devoted to family, fellowship, work, freedom, and form. Wright recalls his childhood, his apprenticeship with Dankmar Adler and Louis Sullivan, the turmoil of his personal life, and the background to his greatest achievements, including Hollyhock House, the Prairie and the Usonian Houses, and the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo.

Great Book

I am an architect and I am familiar with most of Frank Loyd Wright's buildings but knew very little about his life. A heart felt book, that made me realise the importance of doing what you beieve in. I decided to read this, after reading "Loving Frank" and getting a taste of what his life was like.

See the world through Wright's eyes

This book is actually my first study on this amazing man, so I can only guess how much of it is honest and how much he is deceiving himself. But one thing's for sure: it is truly fascinating. One can't get much closer to understanding his creative perspective, and why he chose to design certain projects the way he did. If you are interested in the creative process, this book is a great read.

A Bit Pompous

Wright is rather cranky at times in this, his autobiography. He did have a famous extramarital affair (leading to his second marriage) that he touches on in the most oblique, huffy manner, and, as if it was always fresh in his mind, he seemed to feel a need to be defensive.
I am sure that others wrote better Wright biographies, and so I am inclined to recommend that the reader find one of those first. This book is probably better for a researcher looking to quote Wright.
He explains his architectural concepts somewhat generally, but those parts are engaging. He is warm towards his mentor, family, and friends, saving the book from being a complete rant.
A highly polished ego shines from the pages, not surprisingly. The writing really drags at times, to the point where I had to put the massive thing down for about a year before having the guts to pick it up again and finish it. Not totally unenjoyable, for it is, after all, the word of one of the most respected and admired architects in history.
