Catching up on programming languages

I have programmed in Basic, Pascal, and Visual Basic. I skipped C, so until recently I wanted to catch up on some languages and learn Java. I read the Sam's Teach Yourself Java in 21 days and when I had finished I found there was still things I was confused about, so I got Java for Dummies. While that cleared up things a bit more. I figured I would go back to the Visual environment. I opened up Visual Studio and realized either I knew nothing about .Net or I hated it. Ok, you you are wondering what this all has to do with C++. I figured I would jump back in time to a period where I should have learned C. I started building Arduino projects, because guess what? They are programmed in C. Having gotten fairly comfortable with C, the language I should have learn a while back, I figured I would work my way back up to Visual Studio and finally be able to understand Java, by learning C++ and C#. I have been purchasing these books used, because of their value and they are kind of hard to find. This is a great book and it was delivered to me brand new with the original CD. For $10, including shipping, I could not have asked for anything better. Now I can hopefully understand what I have been reading in Sam's Teach Yourself C++. Don't get me wrong while my Sam's Teach Yourself Java book was something I would not recommend, the C++ Sam's book is very detailed. I do like it, but the Dummies books are much easier to read and gives you clear and understandable concepts of what your are trying to learn. My bookselves at home are slowly going all yellow from the many Dummies books I have. While some will laugh or hesitate at the title they are a great way to learn a complex subject.

Another Disappointment

Like just about every C++ book I've yet read, this one starts out great but then painfully deteriorates into yet another tiresome trudge through overwhelming, unexplained proceduralism that would have you drink from a fire hose. Your unending quest for a truly good C++ book must therefore continue, I'm afraid.

Great intro for people with minimal CS background (A basic understand of comp sci will naturally help, though)

Very well-done and clear tutorial to C++. I bought this to learn the basics, having done no programming before, and after four months I've made almost a hundred programs, including a chess game and a program to model the quantum physics double-slit experiment. You'l need supplemental resources once you get into functions and classes and things, but for the basics, it was the best book I could find.
Idk if I can write this, but I recommend "Learn c++ by making games" as a supplement, as reading the corresponding sections in both books really helped me learn.
